Mention “Amsterdam” anywhere in the world and people immediately think of drugs, Heineken and the red light district. Few are aware that the city harbours a wealth of romantic tales and secret places, all awaiting discovery by curious travellers like yourself. Join me on a stroll through these pockets of stillness, and learn about the rich history, art and stories that remind us of our shared need for love. Your journey begins in front of the medieval city gate, a few steps away from Amsterdam’s only sculptural dedication to love. It’s a popular area, and yet within minutes you’ll be basking in the silence of a hidden courtyard, the first on our journey of intimacy and human feeling that will include, among other sensory experiences, a visit to an enchanting secret garden, captivating views of romantically significant parts of the cityscape, and an introduction to the delicate scent of trees that everyone notices but no one really sees, all accompanied by stories that speak to the heart of love and longing and make Amsterdam a place about people. This walk is ideal for anyone who journeys with an open heart and likes to know what gives each place its special atmosphere.
It was only five years ago that I finally understood what made Amsterdam such a romantic city. I had been away for years, travelling the world in fulfilment of a dance career that took me to over 25 countries. When I returned, I saw the city as if for the first time. Amsterdam has such an outsized history that it's easy to overlook how intimate it is at the same time, and how it embraces you in that intimacy if you know where to look. I fell in love with it and began finding out more about the place I now call home. It’s been my mission ever since to share my knowledge with curious-minded travellers from around the world. I, your host and romantic guide, look forward to enriching your experience of Amsterdam.
