We will swim and snorkel near Havana to find the remains of one of either this two ships, SS Olivette or City of Alexandria, both American ships that sank in the waters off Havana in an incredible, historic natural event. Depending on the weather and the guests' skills, we will decide to go to one of them each time. We will meet early in the morning in Old Havana. On the way to the beach, I will tell you the story of the century-old shipwreck. AT THE BEACH, we will warm up with simple physical exercises and go over the safety rules. We will also check everybody's comfort with sea activities, as safety is an absolute priority. If needed, we will teach you basic breath-holding techniques. We will swim 450 yards over the coral reef (SS Olivette) or 300 yards (City of Alexandria) until we get on top of the shipwreck. If we are lucky —and any seaman knows that luck is part of the game— we will find the remains of the ships. Normally, you can see the wreck perfectly from the water's surface. The whole expedition might take two to three hours. Later, we can enjoy the beach while sharing stories about nice snorkeling adventures. Ama Y Ale
My name is Amanda and I am a young enthusiastic Cuban that has fallen in love with the sea. I didn’t know what an amazing activity snorkeling was until I met my partner, Ale, who is a regular swimmer and apneist. Since then, the sea is a force binding us together. In the aftermath of Hurricane Maria, I was dwelling on ways of improving our lives and decided that sharing this new passion with others was the best way. Then Ale suggested a shipwreck he knew off and the idea really excited me. By those chances in life, we did our first experience on the SS Olivette on January 12th, 2018, exactly the 100th anniversary of the wreck, and since then, we visit it every weekend! We will swim at Bacuranao / Boca Ciega Beach, 10/20 miles east of Havana. We will start from the shore, slowly swimming to the reef wall, where the ship lies. If necessary, we'll bring a kayak with us. Afterward, if you feel like, we can enjoy lunch (optional, extra cost) in a nice and warm Abanay´s house. She is a chef who will cook for us typical Cuban dishes... the moment to enjoy the company and good talk!
