I will introduce you to this world of Afro Cuban drumming in a fun way—you do not need experience playing percussion. We will start with a brief introduction to the history and origins of Cuban percussion. We'll then follow that with teaching you the different sounds (ways to hit) the drum and various techniques to get to the heart of the rhythms. You will then learn the main rhythms of the rumba—Columbia, Yambú and Guaguancó. By the end of the experience, you will know how to play a number of different percussion instruments and different Afro-Cuban rhythms. We can also introduce you if you like to playing Drums on the Drum kit and other percussion instruments. You will be able to play together with us for a fun mini concert. This experience will last about three hours and its offered in both languages English and Spanish. On Fridays only, after the class we can also visit a rumba show in the neighbourhood. Let us know if you like to come with us. Can't wait to welcome you!
I am a young, recognised Cuban percussionist. Music is my passion. I have been playing drums since my early years. I started my career at the Manuel Samuel Music School, followed by the National Art School (ENA). I had the honor of participating in the Cuban Drum Festival, and won first prize in the percussion category. The following year, I won first prize in the timpani category. I look forward to teaching you the basics of Afro-Cuban drumming and its origins, and the fascinating techniques behind the main rhythms of rumba. No experience necessary. We will adapt to your level and it's fun!
