We will start the day with coffee and a quick bite at a nearby bakery before heading out to the forest where we will go scouting for mushrooms. On the way, I will teach you about the mushrooms we might see and why I choose certain areas. On our tour, you will learn about the habitat of many popular types of mushrooms, how to identify some species good for beginners, and what tools I use for identification, navigation, and investigation. We will spend about 2 hours walking through forested areas where I anticipate finding mushrooms, and we will document what we find. Our goal with each trip is to learn more about a particular area, and the mushrooms that we find in that timeframe. There is no guarantee that we will find a meaningful amount of edible mushrooms so this should not be considered a foraging tour. You will however learn a crazy amount about mushrooms as an organism, as well as mushroom species found in our region. If you are more interested in a foraging tour, please check back for foraging Experiences that I organize in the summer and especially the fall.
I have another well-reviewed mushroom focused AirBnB Experience in Seattle for mushroom identification and cultivation. https://abnb.me/dahoahb2D4 I have been photographing mushrooms in the Pacific Northwest since 2014. You may view many of my observations from around Washington here https://www.inaturalist.org/observations?place_id=46&taxon_id=47170&user_id=jeremy_sea I have been exploring Washington forests for over 10 years and am comfortable with backcountry travel, and have taken courses in orienteering, and wilderness first aid.
We will start at a wonderful French bakery in the Eastlake neighborhood. Then we will travel 1-hour to nearby Mt Baker Snoqualmie National Forest where mushrooms can be found most of the year.
Washington weather can be unpredictable. Please be sure to have appropriate clothing for the weather including warm clothes, and rain attire when needed. We will be walking through forests often time off-trail. You should have comfortable shoes and be prepared for mid, logs, and underbrush.
