This is a storytelling tour. As we walk through Amsterdam's historic center, I tell you stories of the badasses who shaped it. We meet opposite Central Station, where we can see the foundations of Amsterdam. We start with an introduction to each other, then the history of the city. The tour is made of the stories of individuals, but an overview of the city sets the scene. Then we stroll to a dozen sites on our way to the medieval wall and I recount tales associated with each historical spot. Some are inspiring, some are heartbreaking, but all are a part of the city’s complicated past. I followed my curiosity down the rabbit hole of libraries, special collections, and city archives. I emerged inspired by the women who helped build this city. You’ll walk away with a new view of Amsterdam, as well as the ferocious legacy of women who refused to be constrained.
I started Badass Tours after falling in love with Amsterdam’s culture, both past and present. I spent a decade as a theater director in New York, where my work included researching Renaissance manuscripts at the Folger Shakespeare Library, several award-winning plays about women in history, and the Gielgud Fellowship for classical directors. I write about travel and Amsterdam, including picks of the day at Badass Tours on Facebook. I also write historical fiction, including my long-running advice column answered by history’s hidden women at www.ask-a-badass.com.
