Ryoko Kleiger Graduated from Temple University’s Japan Campus in 2016 shortly after her commitment to the United States Military ended. After studying the work of, as well as being greatly influenced by, the PROVOKE artists Kōji Taki and Takuma Nakahira,Yutaka Takanashi, Takahiko Okada, and Daidō Moriyama as well as the newer contemporary japanese photographer Yoshiyuki Okuyama, she set out to create photos bridging the gap of the early Showa-era Tokusatsu cinematic film style and modern escapist photography. The goal primarily being to theorize what would happen if Fuji’s old cinematic film stock, with oversaturated darks and washed out skys, was cut for use in modern analog 35 mm cameras. The results are otherworldly, almost dreamlike images, helped by the inspiration taken from the provoke artists of the late 60s and early 70s.
