Part history, part pop/sub-culture intro, and ALL fun. Before hitting the bars, we'll start in my home with introductions. First to each other and then to the history of the Castro neighborhood and gay bars in general via a little powerpoint presentation I've created (#NerdAlert). We'll also play a lighthearted game I've made up to discover what gay "tribe" we each belong to—bear, twink, or jock, etc—while learning about subcultures among gay men. Now, to the bars! We'll head out to apply what we've learned by visiting three of my favorite Castro bars that each showcase different scenes. Our first stop will be a popular gay sports bar. Next, a bar that's also a historic landmark. Finally, a "wild card" stop that will be tailored to that particular night. By the end of our circuit, you'll have received an introduction to navigating the Castro and will have sampled a small slice of the myriad of gay male subcultures within the larger, beautifully diverse LGBTQ family. Absolutely EVERYONE is welcome on this experience, just note that the bars cater mostly to gay men.
After living and teaching on four continents, I made San Francisco my home several years ago with my (now) husband, and I have haunted the local bars ever since. As a traveler and educator, I love exploring new scenes and sharing my knowledge with others. I've visited gay bars everywhere, from Seoul to Rio, Paris to Cape Town, Oklahoma City to Guiyang, China. In them I've found community—and some funny stories. Check out more pics on Instagram: @CastroCrawl

The Castro is San Francisco's famous "gayborhood"—identifiable by the rainbows literally everywhere. We'll start in my home—a typical San Francisco apartment built in the early 20th century—which is a five-minute walk from the first bar. We'll visit a total of three bars as we get progressively deeper into the Castro. Each bar is a 5 to 10 minute walk from the next. Note: We'll end at the 3rd bar, so not at my home where we started.
最多可有6位年满21周岁的参与者参加。 My apartment is a third floor walk-up, and we'll be walking between the bars. Each are less than 10 minutes from one another on relatively even terrain (minus going downhill for one block with a pretty steep gradient), and all the…
Please note drinks at the bars aren't included. Bring cash—many bars don't take cards. Eat beforehand, drinking on an empty stomach isn't a cute look. All are welcome, no orientation limitations :)
