We will meet at a local County beach park with plenty of parking, then we will bird at the beach and estuary for a bit. We will then walk up a wooded path into the 80-acre, ocean front preserve perched on a coastal bluff. We will look for resident and migratory birds and if we are lucky, we will see dolphins and migrating whales cruising by. I have maintained a checklist of species observed at the preserve and will bring copies. I usually record my observations on eBird and can share checklists with you. Common year-round birds we expect to see include: Wrentit Oak titmouse Goldfinches Red-tailed hawk Red-shouldered hawk Peregrine falcon Black-crowned night heron California thrasher Western scrub jay Spotted towhee Anna's hummingbird Acorn woodpecker Northern flicker Chestnut-backed chickadee Common yellowthroat Dark-eyed junco Brown pelican Great blue heron Blue-gray gnatcatcher The Coastal bird Watching experience is 1 1/2 hours. Your guide will meet you at the County park. Bring your own binoculars or contact us in advance if you'd like to borrow ours. Please note that we will be traveling through an off-leash dog park and are likely to encounter friendly dogs.
I'm a wildlife biologist with a passion for birding and photography. I've lived in the area for 30 years and studied aquatic biology at UCSB. I spent a year working in Fiji as a naturalist and led bird watching trips at an eco resort. Now I bird for fun and for work. I enjoy meeting new people and finding new birds.
Starting at Arroyo Burro Beach park, we will wander past the estuary and stroll up to an 80-acre coastal preserve. The ocean front preserve is the largest area of coastal open space in the city of Santa Barbara and was once proposed for development. In 1996, Santa Barbara residents raised money to help save the property, which was then named "Douglas Family Preserve," in recognition of the $600,000 contribution by actor Michael Douglas.
最多可有6位年满12周岁的参与者参加。 I'm flexible with dates and times, just contact me to book other times and dates. Guests should be comfortable around dogs. The walk includes a short uphill and downhill slope, but the majority of the trails are flat.
Flexible dates/times, just ask. Please note that the tour traverses an off-leash dog park, so we will likely encounter friendly dogs.
