We will meet for a chat about surfing, your interest and your experiences, and I will be available for your questions, like, you know, where the biggest wave is, if I surfed it and if there are sharks in the Algarve etc...just kidding... And I will invite you to my shaping room: I will show you what making a surfboard starts with; the struggle of choosing a shape and a size, the tools I use. And you can have a little go yourself. I'm always excited to talk about surf, board shapes, fins and the differences it makes to your surfing experience, in order to let you understand why hand shaping is so much different from the machine shaping and mass produced surfboards. Whether you are a curious beginner shaper / just started surfing or you've been surfing for some time / or might even never tried it but you are interested in craftsmanship, this little workshop should be the right for you to fill one of the afternoons
Samuel & Anastasia
Hi! I'm Sam and I'm a surfboard shaper based in the Algarve. The boards I make are mainly classic shapes which are just fun to surf. I was born in the UK and settled in Lagos where I now have a workshop in the basement of Coffee & Waves coffee shop. My background is in engineering and back in the day I used to build cars which progressed to building surfboards. In the last 10 years I've built by hand many surfboards named Bob's Boards and I started teaching short workshops "Surf talk and Introduction to shaping" as long as full "Make your own board" courses.
My shaping room is located underneath Coffee & Waves coffee shop in the old town which is also a showroom for my surfboards. You can have a cup of a decent coffee and read through many surf books and magazines collected by us around the world.
casual clothing (you might get dusty)
The bigger the group booked the longer our workshop might take so everybody has a chance to participate in discussion.
