I will greet you in my house with appetizers and non-alcoholic drinks (you are welcome to bring your own if you want). Then, I will give you a quick introduction to Brazilian samba and its main components: dance, singing, and playing instruments--all of which are highly participatory. We'll move to the "samba room" and we will go over each one of these aspects of samba-making. Guests will be involved in different aspects of singing the chorus for samba songs (in Portuguese! Easy-breezy!); clapping (there's a syncopated clapping for samba!); learning basic samba steps,; and even playing a few instruments. You will be doing what feels comfortable and will experience the wonderful energy of a "roda de samba" (samba circle) in the company of a small friendly and enthusiastic group of people.
I am a Brazilian living in the Pioneer Valley for the past 9 years. I was born surrounded by samba songs and dance. I started hosting an informal "samba de roda" in my house 2 years ago. Since then, it's been a wonderful way to keep connected with the culture and attract friends from near and far. Samba is pure energy, life, and good vibration.
Appetizers Let me know if you on a special diet or have food restrictions.
Non-alcoholic beverages Let me know what your preferences are and I will do my best to accommodate.
My house is decorated with Brazilian art all over! So you will see a typical New England farmhouse from the outside, but as soon as you get in, you will be transported to Brazil. We also have a small and sweet "samba room" that we will use for this wonderful experience.
Alcoholic drinks (optional)
You'll follow my guidance into singing the chorus part of simple songs...in Portuguese! It may feel intimidating at first, but very soon all fears will go away. And I will offer translations.
