We will begin the evening in the Penn Museum’s outdoor courtyard, an enchanting cobblestone courtyard with fountains, beautiful flowers, light fare, and most importantly – live music and an outdoor bar! After our group has assembled, we will head inside the Museum for an evening of all-things-ancient-Egypt. We will explore the Upper Egypt Gallery (which of course includes mummies!) for about 30 minutes and then transition into a workshop where you will get to assume the role of an ancient Egyptian Mummy Maker! Explore mummification through each step of the process by preparing a life-like mummy for his journey to the afterlife. After the tour and workshop, you are free to explore the Museum or head back out into the courtyard to enjoy the music and drinks! Don’t worry, if the weather doesn’t cooperate, the music, food, and drink will move indoors.
As a life-long museum lovers, there is nothing that we enjoy more than exploring the vibrant cultural scene in Philadelphia. We have worked at the Penn Museum for a few years now and are continuously impressed by the events, exhibitions, and knowledge unearthed within this historic building. My colleagues and I offer a variety of tours and behind-the-scenes into the inner workings of the largest university museum in the United States – and we hope to share with you some of our favorite artifacts and insider stories!
Open to all, the Penn Museum is home to nearly one million artifacts, many unearthed by the Museum’s own extraordinary excavations over the past century and a half. All hold the captivating stories of humankind, from the mystery of the ancient world, to present day cultures and concerns. The Penn Museum is a place for all to discover, experience, and explore who we are and where we came from.
