You'll enjoy a fascinating walk on Belfast’s beautiful and iconic Cave Hill with spectacular views. This is a hill walk with short stops to talk about the history of this famous site including Belfast Castle. We’ll walk up to the imposing caves, then along Devil’s Punchbowl, ascending to McArt’s Fort, the ancient seat of Celtic kings. We’ll take in views of Titanic town’s famous cranes looking out to where Titanic was launched in 1911. From Cave Hill you’ll see views of Strangford Lough (Vikings), Lough Neagh, the Mourne Mountains, Divis & Black Mountain, Belfast Lough and Slemish Mountain (once home to St Patrick). We then descend along Limestone Quarry and into the intriguingly named Mammystown & Daddystown - the remains of quarry workers’ cottages. We’ll walk along what used to be an old rail track that brought limestone to Belfast docks. You’ll hear amusing stories including the false teeth dilemma of one woman during the Belfast Blitz. You will learn about WW2 crashes including the real life stories told in movies like Closing The Ring and Zoo. You will drink water from a stream and depending on the season, taste wild garlic, hazelnuts and bilberries.
I’m a walking and tour expert specialising on the history of the hills above Belfast. I have run the Belfast Hill Walking Dynamos group for over 10 years on Meetup. I’m a journalist and a teller of local stories with safety a top priority. I love nature and local history and bring my knowledge of these into my walks. I worked at the Belfast Hills Partnership - a conservation charity - for 8 years where I led public walks. I talk about seats of Celtic kings, Irish rebels, United Irishmen, the Belfast Blitz, linen mills and early aviator Lilian Bland.
I’ve been walking Cave Hill with my dogs all my life. Generations of my family living in this area give me an strong emotional attachment to it. I feel part of its history and want to see visitors enjoy it and for it to be preserved for generations to come.
