After a brief welcome and personal introduction in my fully equipped studio I will make you familiar with the basic aspects of natural dyeing. We are going to visit Mercado del Puerto were we will find some of our dye stuff. A 90x90 cm silk scarf is waiting for you to get creative designing unique patterns with all kinds of natural materials. Leaves, flowers, tree bark and locally sourced cochineal are used to create a singular, unrepeatable pattern. With the bundle dye or eco print technique, the pigments from our dye stuff are directly transferred to the textile. Hands on, its time to play! While the dye pot is sitting on the cooker we have plenty of time to dig a bit deeper into the history of cochineal on the Canaries. This little bugs, that are cultivated on the prickly pear cacti, were very important for the local economy. A little breakfast and time to socialize is going to help to wait for the exciting moment of opening your personal creation, that is going to be a materialized memory of you holidays. I would be pleased to share one of my biggest passions with you!
I am German but 20 years ago I fell deeply in love with Gran Canaria, its nature, people and lifestyle. My textile studio is located in the vibrant capital Las Palmas, close to the Las Canteras beach. As a hand weaver I create unique textiles like scarfs and shawls. I am officially recognized as a craftsman by the Island Government. Some years ago, a local weaver and dyer taught me how to transfer color from plants and the Canarian cochineal bug to natural fibers. I love to share my passion and knowledge through hand tailored workshops. www.ulitasloom.com @ulitasloom

Silkscarf 90x90 cm, dyes
My workshop is located in a hundred year old building, that has been a naval mechanic workshop. Many years ago, the dry dock of the harbor was in my street. We are going to visit Mercado del Puerto, which is the most important example for cast-iron architecture on the Canary Islands. During more than hundred years it has been a vivid representation of the dynamic development of the city and the commercial port.
