Guests will be introduced to a brief description of the history of filigree in Portugal, after which we will get on the road to Gondomar, where we will be received by the filigree master, António, in his own workshop. Our guests will be able see him in action, the different processes will be explained all the way from preparing the threads to the silver plating process. The guests will then be invited to produce their own filigree piece, which will be silver plated at the end. Due to time constraints, the silver piece you will be making will be about 4.5 cm in size and may not be completely filled, but filigree is a combination of filled and empty spaces and you can adapt your design around these features. Because all this learning and creating makes one hungry and thirsty, there will be a coffee break with refreshments and cookies.
We are a filigree enthusiast and a filigree master. Lucinda has a degree in modern languages, which includes Portuguese culture, and has been hosting guests in her daughter's apartment in downtown Porto. A long time enthusiast for Portuguese filigree, Lucinda explains to her daughter's guests the most relevant aspects of Portuguese culture, including the art of filigree. António is a filigree master, having started to work in this art at the age of 7. His work has recently enjoyed international recognition due to one of his stunning creations being used by a Hollywood star.
All materials, including silver thread, will be provided. And, of course, you get to take your design home with you.
We will be traveling to the town of Gondomar about 8 km east of Porto, famous for its filigree production. There we will meet António in his workshop.
