Discover one of Colorado’s best kept culinary secrets - wild edible mushrooms! Enjoy an alpine hike above 10,500ft as we learn about the magic and mystique of these fungal forest dwellers. We will meet in Aspen at 2:30pm then drive guests to a secret location within an hour. During the drive we will discuss the basics of local mushrooms and their ecology. We'll trek through the woods and forage for 2-3 hours. Expect stunning vistas, high alpine meadows, mixed conifer forests, and beautiful wildflowers. We typically cover 3-6 miles, walking moderately and looking down for yummy mushrooms. Trent and Kristen will be close by to share knowledge and point out likely habitat. Guests will learn to spot 5 key mushrooms that are safe & easily identifiable: Porcini (Boletus edulis), Chanterelle (Cantharellus cibarius), Puffball (Lycoperdon perlatum, Lycopedon pyriforme), Hawk's Wing (Sarcodon imbricatus) and Milky Cap (Lactarius deliciosus). After the hunt, we will gather together, inspect our findings, & enjoy refreshments. At this time we'll discuss the cleaning, preparation & preservation of wild mushrooms. We will drive back to Aspen and should have you back around 7:30.
Self proclaimed “mushroom geeks”, Trent and Kristen Blizzard, reside in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. They’ve been trekking the woods of the Roaring Fork Valley and beyond for over 5 years. At first a hobby, the hunt for fungi quickly became nothing short of an obsession for these two. Each year they travel to Oregon in May to gather burn morels, and rush back to Colorado to find some late asparagus and eagerly await the beginning of the local season. They are not mycologists but love to utilize the science behind edible mushrooms to help them locate prime terrain.

We’ll be exploring National Forest land in and around accessible high alpine areas of Aspen. Within 30 minutes you’ll be above 10,500ft! The exact spots we go will be secret until we get there. Expect moderate hiking, 3-5 miles, +/- elevation of several hundred feet. If you live at low altitude, please acclimatize at least 24 hours before trying this trek. The weather at high altitude can change on a dime, be prepared for extremes!
最多可有6位年满10周岁的参与者参加。 All levels of hikers are welcome but you must be in good physical shape and capable of hiking 1-2 hours up potentially steep inclines at over 10,500ft.
Wear hiking boots or sturdy shoes
We scramble off-trail & do some bushwhacking - this requires good footwear (boots vs shoes) and pants (to avoid scratched legs). Expect mosquitos and bring your own repellant.
