During this 3 hours walk through the Geek Capital of the World, you will be able to understand the history, social context and importance of both, otaku subculture and Akihabara. Together we will explore Akiba and submerge deep into the different aspects of one of Japan's most known and yet, misunderstood subcultures: the otaku. I will explain to you the reasons behind Akihabara's transformation from a market of electronic appliances into the hub of Otaku. Anime, manga, videogames all are important aspects of the everyday life of Akihabara, and through our chat, you will be able to understand its role and significance on Japanese and global culture, as well as the background of many of its different contents. By the end of the walk you will have a deep knowledge and understanding of Otaku Subculture and would have seen the most important spots of Akihabara.
I am Phd candidate at Waseda University, specializing in Japanese popular culture; creative industries and the Cool Japan Strategy. I have collaborated with different government agencies and private companies involved in the “Cool Japan Strategy” on developing projects to export Japanese contents such as Anime, Manga, Music, Videogames and Film. This has made me familiar not only with all the unique places related to Otaku Culture in Japan, but with many different aspects of the Japanese media production as well as its cultural significance and background.
I will take you to my favorite shops, each one showing different aspects of the otaku subculture, not only anime and manga. We will also visit some old electronic shops so you can understand the origin of the "Electric Town" as well as some retrogaming shops to know about the role of videogames Japan's everyday life. From there we can go to Kanda Myojin Shrine to see the mixture of shinto and modern pop culture. Optional visit to a Maid Cafe.
