THE ROYAL WILLIAM YARD - THE BARBICAN - THE MESSENGER Time: 3hrs+ Meet at the impressive gates of The Royal William Yard. Once a prestigious victualling yard for the Royal Navy, the Clarence, Slaughterhouse, Brewery & the Cooperage, today house some of the best places in Plymouth to eat, drink and explore! Enjoy a warming drink and yummy cake at Ocean Studios, hearing stories of Georgian Plymouth and the locals who lived and worked here. If the weather is on our side we'll wander up to Devil's Point on the South Coast Path before embarking on a mini-voyage (by ferry) to the Barbican. Think Drake, Darwin and Cook; Pocahontas, Lady Astor, Charlie Chaplin and Houdini; Admire John Smeaton's iconic lighthouse on the Hoe & learn of Royalty linked to the rocks in Firestone Bay and the Hoe. Disembark at the Mayflower Steps on the Barbican (Pilgrim Fathers sailed from here almost 400 years ago) and marvel at the sights, sounds and smells of the port where infamous voyages began and notorious deals were made. Today we have the largest Aquarium in Britain and much, much more! Travelling back in time through Elizabethan streets and houses, relax inside one with a delicious cream tea or a splendid glass of locally distilled gin (or rum) and soak up the atmosphere and hospitality of New Street. To finish we will wander to the Messenger via a few secret spots to show Plymouth today ...
PLEASE NOTE THESE TOURS ARE SUSPENDED DUE TO COVID-19 UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE ...STAY HOME AND BE SAFE! I have lived in Plymouth for more than 20 years and am proud to call it home. It's a city full of stories, adventures, history & art and the Royal William Yard is one of it's secret jewels. I'm a travel explorer who loves the diversity of Devon and its surrounding counties. As a fully trained and experienced tour guide I have led groups through the whole of the SW of England, whilst my City and Guilds Cooks Certificate feeds into my passion for creating and tasting delicious, locally sourced, fresh food. I qualified as a teacher some 25+ years ago and as a drama teacher I loved finding the stories behind the characters in a play - now I enjoy finding the stories behind the buildings.
Enjoy coffee & a delicious homemade cake from local, independent cafes in the Royal William Yard OR a traditional Devon…
