In this 4 hour crash course we will move through the elemental steps of hip hop beat making. From sampling vinyl breaks to using modern day drum machine and synths, I will take you on a journey through the ever evolving sound of hip hop. My goal is to help you find your fire! We will start by picking records from my collection to sample, students will learn how to chop up the samples on a drum machine and create their own songs from them. We will then work our way up to arranging and mixing, after which you will have a finished beat to take home. This will be an interactive course where I will lead by demonstration and then coach a student led hands on learning experience. There will be a 30 minute break where I will treat you to some delights from the famous Northside Bakery next door and unlimited tea is on me! Afterwards, feel free to explore the wonders of Williamsburg! Sample the chicken and waffles from the Nas co-owned hip hop hang out Sweet Chick across the street, or let me direct you to some of the most spectacular graffiti to be found anywhere in the city. A legendary hiphop experience awaits you!
I am REACHOUT - a hip hop artist, producer and DJ with over 25 years experience. Since the late 90's I have produced and released records for myself and other hip hop artists, performed in the US and Europe, recorded live BBC sessions and was featured on MTV. I am originally from Scotland and now live with my fiancé and baby boy at my studio The Restless Native in Brooklyn, where I provide production, mixing and tuition for local artists. As well as performing with my partner DE LA ROCA, I also DJ at parties across NYC, providing eclectic and passionate sets on laptop and vinyl.
Cakes from the famous Northside bakery next door!
Filtered water and unlimited tea!
Vintage Technics 1200 Turntable, Native Instruments Maschine, Arturia 88 hammer action keyboard, Logic Pro X, 27" iMac.
We will work at my home studio The Restless Native in Williamsburg. Situated inside a classic railroad apartment, the studio is full of Brooklyn character and cool gear! It is built to be a very hands on and interactive experience, while the beautiful room provides lots of light and space for inspiration. I designed and handmade all the wooden furniture, from the record shelves where we'll pick samples to the kitchen table where we'll eat cakes!
