Our tour starts in Flagler Village, home to the up and coming arts district of Fort Lauderdale. We begin by exploring the history of Fort Lauderdale's pioneers and how they impacted the development of the city. As we walk we will examine the relationship between the built environment and how that impacts crime, traffic, and the experience of being a pedestrian. We will discuss the history and various types of architectural forms including brutalism, frame vernacular, revival, modern and mid-century modern. We will identify the city's most well-known pieces of architecture, and discuss the interpretation of those buildings. Although Fort Lauderdale is not known for its hills, I will show you 3 hills in the city that most locals don't know exist. We will conclude our tour at the MASS district, Music and Arts South of Sunrise, one of the city's two art districts, known for it's galleries, bars, and breweries.

This is a walking tour, please wear comfortable walking shoes. Remember to bring a bottle of water. Some people like to wear a hat, bring one if you feel you need one.

I am an architect with over 30 years of experience in the city of Fort Lauderdale. During that time I have helped organize and develop the planning and organization for the city. For the past 10 years, I have been engaged in urban farming and food policy, building urban farms in the downtown area and supplying restaurants with locally sourced produce. I have taught as an adjunct professor at local colleges. Lastly, you should know that I am legally blind, with only a 2% field of vision. Although blind, I have been leading this tour for almost 6 months. See you soon...Ha.

This tour travels through the Flagler Village / Downtown Fort Lauderdale neighborhoods. We will walk through Peter Feldman Park and the Open Canvas Project. You will experience some of the city's most well-known buildings including the First Baptist Church, the Federal Courthouse Building, City Hall, the Exchange building, FAT art village, MASS District and more.

- Michael took the effort to reschedule this tour for me. He is exceedingly knowledgeable about city planning and architecture. On that basis, he made this tour a very engaging revelation for me. He describes what goes on behind the scenes in order to produce the things you see every day, but never really think about. This is what makes it so eye-opening and enjoyable. I recommend that you do this tour, even if urban planning does not interest you. This tour may just be the thing to get you intrigued.
- This was an amazing experience. Michael is a trained architect and he completely changed my way of viewing buildings. He explained many design features of the buildings we passed, he explained the uses these buildings were put to in the past and their present uses. He explained the goal of the architects who designed these buildings and why they chose the materials they used in their construction He talked about his vision for the Fort Lauderdale area we explored. I couldn’t have had a better guide. Every other architectural tour I ever take will be influenced by this tour
