After strolling through the beautiful 1800's Victorian residential streets, we'll follow the upbeat sounds of reggae music and Latin American salsa that will take us into the heart of the Market. We'll explore East Indian spice shops and local bakeries, organic cafes and vegetarian restaurants. We'll stop at "Jimmy's", a local favourite coffee shop and enjoy a coffee before heading out again. We'll stroll down "Kensington Ave." enjoying vintage clothing stores, health food stores and fresh produce stands. We'll learn about the importance of the "Kensington Market Garden Car" and finish off at a unique gift market. Along the way we'll learn about the historical importance of the Market and how it has changed over the years to make it one of the most vibrant neighbourhoods in the world.
Born and raised in Toronto, Kensington Market has been a part of my life since childhood. It was where I bought my first vintage dress in the 80's and where my family bought groceries on a weekly basis. Twenty years later, it was home to my husband and I; when we lived in a coach house near Bellevue Park. It is also the highly anticipated destination for an annual field trip with my students.
