An estuary nearly twice the area of Manhattan lays before us. Here on the very edge of NYC we will set sail upon Jamaica Bay; a realm that exists within yet without the rest of New York city. Pop a bottle, soak up the sunset, stretch out and catch some ray's. You can even help sail the boat and learn a bit. The world is your oyster. Within a hundred yards distance from the dock the signs of civilization start to fade away. Lush greenery dominates the landscape as we are flanked on both sides by wild parkland. Eventually the waters widen before us as we enter into Jamaica Bay proper. Directly to our north is Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge; the green heart of the bay. Grassy marshland and deserted islands interlaced with myriad channels are within reach. Ospreys, hawks, herons, and egrets are but a few of the birds that you can spy via the boats binoculars. If you'd like to get your feet wet or do a little shore-side exploration then we can drop anchor at one of several secluded areas. Swimming is an option. There are also 4 different restaurants with docks where you can grab a drink or call in an order to bring aboard. My boat, the Norfolk Oyster, is as safe and stable as she is beautiful, but it should be known that sailing is best undertaken by the able bodied & optimistic individual.
Hi, my name is Sean and I'll be your Captain aboard the sailboat "Christina". Ill also be your guide to Jamaica Bay; its history and natural environment. Perhaps I'll be your off-the-cuff sailing instructor if you fancy. Maybe I won't be anything at all while you tune out to the sound of the water lapping against the side of the hull. I grew up in the sailing community of Port Washington, New York on Long Island Sound. Ive sailed, drifted and motored on waters ranging from Penobscot Bay in Maine to the windward islands in the Caribbean. For the last ten years I've been sailing on my 17 ft. Norfolk Oyster sloop "Christina"; exploring Jamaica bay and loving it's consistent winds, calm waters, and natural surroundings. But theres more! I hold a United States Coast Guard captains license (oupv) and a NYS Boating Safety Certification.
Life preservers for adults and children, and infants, Binoculars, Bluetooth speaker, Zoca brand ocean-safe sunscreen,…
We will spend most of the experience sailing aboard the "Christina" in the eastern and central portions of Jamaica Bay. We can sail along the grassy marshes of the wildlife refuge, under the A train bridge or get a close look at the flying planes of JFK airport. We can pull the boat up to one of several little remote beaches to explore the shore or go swimming. We can dock the boat at a restaurant and grab a drink or food to bring on the boat.
It only takes 2 people to fully reserve the whole boat! However, I can comfortably accomadate a party of four. Please message me and I will adjust the price settings so you can sign up extra people. I can also add custom times for you upon request.
