Participate in an ongoing public art project with a local artist where you’ll use blocks of wet porcelain to make impressions of Downtown LA’s iconic urban textures. Equipped with a personal field kit that contains all of the tools and materials you’ll need to make a Hand Pressed Souvenir, guests will see the city from a unique perspective on this leisurely yet engaging walking excursion. Departing from the artist’s studio, each experience will take a slightly different exploratory route through the Fashion District and Historic Core. The Hand Pressed Souvenirs created on these walks will become part of the artist's archive and exhibited in future gallery and museum shows. Guests each receive a miniature handmade vessel as an exchange for leaving their personal mark in the collection.
Field Kit for project
I am an LA-based artist and Professor of ceramics (at Scripps College) with a deep passion for clay. I am endlessly fascinated by the material’s ability to absorb and to shape our human experience. The act of walking in the city became one of my primary art-making tools about ten years ago and I love sharing this approach with others.
This excursion begins and ends at the artist’s studio in the Fashion District and winds through the Historic Core of Downtown LA. Guests will discover original Los Angeles architecture, bargain shopping in Santee Alley, fashion showrooms, and tucked-away art galleries.
