The underground jazz scene in NYC has been swinging for over a hundred years. On this Experience we will dive right into the heart of that scene by visiting two small Greenwich Village joints hidden in the shadows cast by more luminary venues like the Village Vanguard and the Blue Note. I've made a habit of…
Uber If we need to ride between venues, I'll spring for the taxi.
I'm a third generation New Yorker, living in Astoria. Long ago, I was bitten by the jazz and travel bugs - Wherever I visited in the world I always felt most comfortable in jazz clubs. That's where my people are, and they've inspired me in many ways: I've owned a jazz club in Harlem, worked at radio stations and record companies, managed musicians, blogged my tuchus off, and for the past 20 years I've been designing and leading unique, nightly jazz crawls to dozens of clubs every week as the owner of Big Apple Jazz Tours. My claim to fame is that I walked across the USA for Peace in 1986.
There are more jazz joints in the West Village, Greenwich Village and Tribeca than most people realize. My greatest joy is showing New Yorkers and visitors alike, what is hidden below the radar of the downtown scene, and hipping them to the most passionate players on earth.
Food and drink is extra - food not always available. Dress code is up to you. We will probably be walking some in good weather. Close up photos/videos of musicians are possible, no flash though.
