Whether you want help with the start of your novel, have a short story that needs fine tuning or this is the first class in creative writing you have taken, Bridget and I can help improve your skills in a supportive, confidence-boosting workshop. No matter if you're a complete beginner or have some experience, it'll get you going. The 3.5 hour session will take place in my home very close to the centre of Brighton. You and up to five others (max) will be welcomed into my cosy living room with its fire and long dining table ideal for writing. We'll cover the following topics: * Character creation - making characters memorable and believable, avoiding stereotypes and being original * First and third person storytelling - exploring the choices you have * Plotting - where to start, how to stop a flabby middle, endings * Editing - a practical exercise to reveal your inner editor Plus three subjects rarely covered in writing courses: * Feedback - how to survive critical comments * Dialogue - how to make conversation sound natural and drive narrative * Up-to-date insights on the publishing industry Let us know ahead if there's something you want included and we'll try to make time for it. Above all we hope you'll take away a little piece of 'us', so to speak - our understanding and passion for writing and our own experiences of being published.
'Reading a Sarah Rayner book is like having a no-holds-barred chat with a close friend' and I love chatting about writing. I'm the author of 5 novels including the international bestseller, One Moment, One Morning. In 2014 I published Making Friends with Anxiety which grew into a non-fiction series with a substantial on-line following. I've sold over 500,000 books worldwide, but my first foray into fiction was writing short stories for women's magazines. My co-host is creative writing guru Bridget Whelan, whose writing career took off when she won $4000 in an international story competition. It kick-started a new career and now she has an MA in Creative Writing from Goldsmiths College and lectures in the subject. My husband, Tom, a chef, will cook delicious vegetarian food specially for us. He tends over-cater so expect big portions!
We will provide a vegetarian lunch (quiche and salad, chilli and baked potatoes or a hearty soup with dumplings depending on…
Please let us know if you have any particular preferences.
We will provide pens and paper and writing prompts.
The writing workshop will be held our charming period home in central Brighton (our little blue house is 8 mins walk from the station). A long table in the light living/dining room will provide our work space and on colder days we'll light the fire so we can be really snug. Tom and I have been Airbnb hosts for three years and in that time have hosted over 300 guests and are thrilled to welcome aspiring writers too.
最多可有6位年满16周岁的参与者参加。 If you wish, you can email up to 1000 words of your novel, short story or memoir to us before the workshop commences, so we can read it beforehand and chat about it on the day.
If you wish for feedback on the first 1000 words of your novel or short story, please send it to us at least 24 hours ahead.
We will start at the time listed, sharp. If you want to arrive a few minutes early to settle, that's fine. If wheelchair users wish to attend, there is a very small step into the hall, but it should be manageable and you'd be very welcome.
