We will meet on the foreshore at the Northern end of Tower Bridge before walking along the river through the historic East End areas of Wapping, Ratcliffe and Limehouse along Wapping High Street and the Thames path. Along the way we will discover the history of the Port of London from the construction of the first great docks to its heyday as the largest and most important port in the world, while walking among some of East London's finest surviving industrial architecture.

From the Tower to Poplar, this stretch of riverside has seen hundreds of years of maritime history and on this tour you will discover how the docks were constructed and operated, and how the communities of East London's Sailortown lived alongside them and, at times, used the docks to their advantage. Taking in the well-preserved wharves and docks that line the riverfront we will learn the economic logic that drove the creation of the port, how dock communities lived and worked in conditions unrecognisable to today, and hear the stories of piracy and theft which help to give this area its lasting reputation.

In my work I've been lucky enough to hear numerous colourful tales from people who lived and worked on the docks, and will happily stop for a good yarn if you ask!

Hi! I live and work in heritage in East London and for 3 years have led tours as a local museum guide from the Docklands museum at the heart of London's historic port. My background and qualifications are in maritime history and I specialise in the international trade links and waterside communities of London's East End. I lead tours throughout the year covering multiple aspects of London's history including the early Roman settlement of Londinium, the Blitz of 1940-1941, the regeneration of Canary Wharf and the haunted history of the Port of London.
