Where the black sand beach meets the tumultuous Tasman Sea , it was the location for the beach scenes for the 1993 Academy Award winning film 'The Piano' . A mighty waterfall. Captivating sunsets. Walking tracks guaranteed to be among the best Aotearoa has to offer, with diverse native flora and birdlife and impressive coastal views.

Tranquil Valley Home, 4 guests 2 upstairs bedrooms. A walk on Karekare beach is one of the most memorable walks in the country. Some of the local bush and coastal walks are also highly rated. Karekare had some significant flooding in February 2023. There are still some road works being completed. We inform guests about these at the time of the booking. A tiny isolated hut amidst Kauri and Rimu trees to escape the world, self check in. Outdoor Fire, long drop, outdoor hot shower/bath. Surrounded by Tuis and Wood pigeons the hut is close to Piha and Karekare…or simply stay and enjoy nature. Beaches are 10 minutes away by car. Grocery shopping and gassing up recommended beforehand. Misty Mountain Hut supports local Piha staff by paying $40/hr.
