I really enjoyed my stay here. I am writing a longer review than usual because I want other guests to know about my excellent experience in Haiti and hope that they will come visiting. Those non-Haitians curious about Haiti surely are wondering, is it safe? What can I expect? You'll be in good hands with Ronald. With my experience, I got more than just a place to lay my head at night, I had someone that was looking out for me, helped me maximized my time in Pétion-Ville (PV). He found me in the crowd when I arrived at the bus station, took me to the room, assisted me with getting a few groceries, a trip to the ATM, and then we hung out and drank some beers. It was great. It was like that each day I was there, I would seem him a times throughout the day, but I explore PV myself on my own. Didn't have any issues. To me it just as safe as Dominican Republic. I was only in PV though, I didn't go to Port-au-Prince, PV was more than enough for me. A friend of Ronald's (Ricardot) also drove me around the town while he ran errands, and it was a great way to see PV without having to do it on foot cuz it's super hot there, like 36 degrees, even hotter than Santo Domingo, and full-on sun, didn't rain a drop the whole time I was there. It didn't take long until I knew my way around, PV isn't that big. I was also introduced to mutual friends of theirs, had some meals, BS'd a lot, I went through a lot of Prestige (the local beer). It was a real authentic experience that I love about Airbnb. Both Ronald & Ricardot sincerely care that you'll leave with a favorable impression of Haiti. And while I felt totally safe in PV, Ronald still gave me a ride to the room at night to make sure everything was fine. Ronald seems to know everyone there and is well respected by the community. Kind of like an unofficial mayor of PV. I believe he told me his great-grandfather was mayor of PV at one time! I was there for just four nights, just wanted to see what PV & Haiti were like. I am so glad I went. It was the highlight of my 3 week trip to Hispaniola. The room itself is big and has what's needed to sleep, there is no A/C or TV. But why would you want to hang in the room when you have Haiti at your doorstep? PV bustles during the day but it's quiet at night, it's like everyone is in by 9:30 pm. I felt safe in the room. There were four doors that I had to open to get into the room, and these are iron doors, not flimsy wood. Plus there are guard dogs on the compound where my room was to bolster the security. ☺
You will come for the central walkable location, and you may want to stay because of the hospitality and good food. A cook comes through out the week, so look forward to trying some good Haitian food. Transportation to Jacmel is also possible. Ronald, his family, and friends took good care of me. Thanks!
Very nice room right next to the Caribe Tours bus station. Wifi, A/C, nice and reasonably priced restaurant next door. Ronald is a great host and will help you with whatever you need.
Ronald's place in Petionville is located 1/2 block from the main Caribe Tours bus station in Port-au-Prince and about 2 blocks from another major bus station. The apartment in a perfect location if you are taking the bus to Santo Domingo or coming from Santo Domingo to Port-au-Prince. The A/C works but is only on during the hours that the electricity grid works in Port-au-Prince, so it is not available during the overnight sleeping hours (however, there are two fans in the room). Be advised that there are dogs and roosters in the neighborhood, so if you are a light sleeper you'll need to bring some good earplugs. Ronald picked me up from the airport for around $40.00 and offered to take me to Jacmel for a similar amount. He lived in the United States for many years so he is fluent in English and several other languages.
