Der Salkantay Trek - war für uns sehr spektakulär. Der Trek an sich ist einfach mega schön: tolle Lagune am ersten Tag, traumhafte Aussicht am Salkantay Pass - atemberaubende Landschaft am Weg bis Aguas Calientes. Wir haben es sehr genossen - die Organisation von Edwin & Familie war einfach 🔝! Alle Familien und deren Unterkünfte auf unserem Weg waren einfach spitze. JEDE Familie war super lieb, mega gastfreundlich & hilfsbereit! Das Essen war unglaublich gut - wir hatten keine Wünsche offen! Jede Familie kümmert sich sehr gut & erklärt auch immer den Weg und Ablauf des folgenden Tages. Es ist unserer Meinung völlig unmöglich sich zu verlaufen. Ich würde es jedem wärmsten empfehlen. (Spanisch Kenntnisse sind von großem Vorteil - so kann man sich mit den Familien besser austauschen) Ein ❤️ - liches Danke an Edwin, Edwins Mama, Alberto, Samir, Sonja & Susanna! I hate to write bad reviews but me and my friend tried to resolve this issue with Edwin but he just made promises and didn’t follow through and ignored us. This is not as advertised. The families along the way that fed us were great but Edwin as a host was not. We paid for two separate rooms and shared the same room up until the last night. The first night was terribly freezing in the room and there was no electricity to charge devices. Upon wake up we discovered the fooor soaked from the rain the night before and there was no electricity to get ready until the sun came up as the lodge is solar powered (no warning that this would be the case). I do not feel the food provided on the morning of the longest day was sufficient to provide energy and nutrients for the hike. On the second day you do have a guide up until the Salkantay pass and then he heads down to prepare lunch. We got lost trying to locate the place for lunch and without a guide and service, we continued the trek to the end without food since breakfast. The hour ride at the end of the second day is actually 3 car rides and more hiking before you arrive to lodging but the food at this stay was the best. On the third day we got lost again, we had to try to get directions from Edwin over the phone.! Edwin did arrange for ONE train ticket from hydroelectric to make up for some of the inconveniences but the only issue with that is there were two of us. He told my hiking partner that he’d arrange for a car to take me the rest of the way, there’s no road from hydroelectric to Aguas Calientes so I was to hike the rest of the way alone, Edwin did have someone from lodging walk to meet me halfway and carry my bag (at the insistence of my friend who’d made it to lodging via train) but at that point nothing could make up for the disastrous day I already experienced. I arrived to lodging where dinner was not provided and my bigger pack was lost (it was located later). I cannot in good faith recommend this company to do this trek with. The trek was beautiful and a once in a lifetime experience but find another company to do it with.

I feel so sad to have to give such a bad review, as the families I stayed with deserve a 5-star review. They were very kind. Unfortunately, the host running this did not meet about half of the promises he made in his very appealing itinerary. My first big problem with him being that he collected payment for two private rooms/bathrooms from myself and another guest, but there was only one room/bathroom available, so we had to share. Not a big deal about the sharing, she was great, but we both paid in full for a private room/private bath... about $800 total... and after asking about any partial refund on this a few times, Edwin just stopped replying. I was able to get out rooms seperated the last night at the hotel, but we shared the rest of the trip and were not reimbursed for this. Additionally, there were no guides provided for this trip, so please be aware that anything stated as "we" actually means "you." I think a guide might have made the price of this Airbnb worth it, but it is extremely overpriced without one (even if I would have gotten my private room.) Also be aware that there was no electricity or Wifi as stated there would be the first night, so you may not be able to contact your family or charge your devices as planned. And don't put any of your belongings on the floor, as it was covered in water in the morning. The wifi did not work the third night either, but you could access it in the lobby! I was not provided two of the lunches that were supposed to be included. When I contacted the host (on day 3) about how this made things difficult for me because I have type 1 diabetes, he said I "should have known the trail would be strenuous." There was no coffee tour, but one of the nice gentlemen who we met showed us a coffee plant that was outside of their kitchen which was cool! They also lost one of our backpacks/passports... so that other guest nearly wasn't able to go to Machu Picchu the next morning without it. Again, very sad to have to write this. Salkantay was beautiful - definitely do it - just not through this Airbnb booking. Save your money and get something with a guide or for a better value. The other hotels/campsites and guides there are much more affordable than this.

Incredible experience, highly recommend it! The food was amazing and there was plenty of it, the views were breathtaking, it’s such a unique experience you can’t get anywhere else

Hiking along the Salkantay Trek while staying at the Refugios Salkantay was such a unique experience for us! The Refugios are a series of hotels/hostels along the trail with hosts who help you along the way. You don't have a guide for most of the hike, but we didn't find that we really needed one. They also help carry your things for most of the trail by horse or car (except for about a 3 hour downhill section). The places themselves are definitely rustic (no heat or soap at any of the places, so just be prepared), but there is hot water and the food they prepared for us was so good! If you are looking for an alternative to hiking with one of the standard guide companies, I would definitely recommend the Refugios Salkantay.
