Saint Jean de Duras is a tiny little village with 250 inhabitants spread over around 5km2 on the border of the Lot et Garonne, Dordogne and Gironde departments. It belongs to the Aquitaine region of South West France and is only half an hour away from Bergerac.
St. Jean de Duras est un petit village d’Aquitaine à la limite nord du Lot et Garonne et de la Dordogne. Les villages d’Eymet, Sainte Foy la Grande, Duras et Miramont de Guyenne sont tous à 10 min. de chez nous. Bergerac a 30 min et St Emilion 50 min.
If you love to go out for walks, you can start straight from our property and walk into the field where you will be surrounded by vineyards, sunflower seeds and superb views. There is a chemin randonée starting right outside our property. The closest bakery is within cycling distance and there is a tiny supermarket 5 minutes away by car. The four larger and charming bastide villages; Eymet, Miramont, Duras and Ste Foy la Grande are all within 10-15 min. away. Here you find large supermarkets, great fêtes de villages, farmer’s markets, restaurants and shops.
Our area is sometimes referred to as the Tuscany of France and there are lots of things to do. Do you like wine? There is more than enough choice in wine chateaus all very close by. We have also gathered a best off from our guests over the years. You can canoo or swim in the Dordogne river close by (20min.). An enormous big castle (chateau de Bridoire) filled with medieval games (15min), a great swim lake with large slide and beach (30 min.), where we love to go ourselves with friends. But also the famous Saint Emilion (45min) or the elegant Bordeaux (1.5h) make lovely day outings and Sarlat (2h) itself, a medieval town where lots of medieval movies have been filmed is very much worth your while.
A garden is there to be enjoyed and you will find lots of little corners on our land to relax with a glass of wine, enjoy the sunset and a campfire or read a book. There are hammocks for a nice nap and the enclosed swimming pool is situated in the middle of a large field with beautiful views. For the children our place is perfect. The road passing by our property has a dead end, so only three of our neighbours are passing by. There is lots and lots of space to run around, catch grasshoppers and there are several play areas for the very small and bigger children.
If you are a garden enthusiast you are at the right address. We don’t need much to burst out in conversation and share with you about all the projects we have done and are working on. We are designing our land according to permaculture principles, a self sustainable way of gardening. We have even set up our own website for the garden. But also when you come and visit us we would love to take you on a tour along our edible flower spirals, we introduce you to new herbs and show you how we are creating edible forest edges in the 10 acre field in front of our house.
Of course we are happy to share our harvest with you, which is growing every year. Pick fresh cherries and plums from the trees, we cook with the veggies from our garden and offer new recipes with fresh figs during our dinners. Plus the whole day free of charge you can make your own fresh herbal teas and pick fresh mint, verveine, sage and fennel from our tea garden.

We are situated in the countryside and there are no busses stopping in front of our place. Your own transport is needed. The closest train station is Sainte Foy la Grande (15km away).
