This extraordinary property is available to rent for family breaks or couples seeking something different, making your stay an unforgettable experience. The ‘domaine des Tilleuls’ is a vast family property located in the heart of Saint-Martin-de-Ré, capital of Ile de Ré and a UNESCO world heritage site as well as being one of the 12 major military defence sites designed by Vauban in the 17th century. The property, set-out as a horse shoe, was built and extended in the 17th and 18th centuries by the Gabaret family who are known for having supplied several distinguished naval officers serving the kingdom of France under Louis XIII and Louis XIV. The family also gave birth to 3 Admirals, a Navy Lieutenant General and a Governor of Martinique. A 4 storey square tower topped by a slate roof, dated 1792 according to its sun clock, extends the North wing of the property. The property has been restored over time by its current owners with greatest respect for its exceptional architectural qualities. It is unique in being available for seasonal holiday rental whilst offering a 360° panoramic view over the town and island. Our family has owned the property since 1920 and it is with passion and great enthusiasm that we continue its patient restoration year after year. The authentic atmosphere has been preserved whilst being cosy and comfortable. You can still admire and use the rustic pine staircase and hand crafted wooden partitions. There is lot of stair in the tower so it must be difficult with a little childs or elderly person.

Excellente semaine, Alain est un hôte très accueillant et le caractère atypique du lieu en fait une location de vacances qui sort de l'ordinaire. La vue depuis la tour est magnifique et le jardin paisible en plein coeur de Saint Martin. Pas de problème pour garer la voiture ce qui est très appréciable compte tenu des difficultés de stationnement dans la ville. Je recommande les yeux fermés !
It was both a privilege and an adventure to stay in this amazing historic building. A huge thankyou to Alain for making us so welcome and being such a friendly, helpful host. The views from the tower are amazing, worth every step of the ancient staircase! Saint-Martin-de-Re makes a great location on the island. Arriving by boat from La Rochelle added to the experience.
Saint-Martin de Ré bedeutet für uns der Inbegriff von Sommerferien in Frankreich und der Turm de Cardet ist der perfekte Ausgangspunkt: wir waren mit unseren beiden erwachsenen Töchtern im Hochsommer dort. Zu Fuß sind es wenige Minuten zum lebhaften Hafen mit seinen zahlreichen Restaurants und Geschäften. Dank der hohen Mauer, die das Anwesen umgibt, bleibt man jedoch völlig privat. Strände und weitere Sehenswürdigkeiten sind bequem mit dem Fahrrad zu erreichen. Die Unterkunft selbst ist im historischen Turm und sehr individuell. Um in die liebevoll eingerichteten Schlafzimmer zu kommen, muss man viele Treppen steigen und wird mit einem tollen Blick belohnt. Komplett eingerichtete Küche, zweckmäßiges kleines Bad. Lediglich der Raum im EG bleibt für uns ein Durchgangsraum und lädt, trotz Sofa, nicht zum Verweilen. Alain ist ein großartiger, zuvorkommender Gastgeber. Wir haben uns sehr wohl gefühlt und kommen gerne wieder.
We had a fantastic week-long stay at the Tour des Cadets. We arrived at an unusual time and Alain went out of his way to welcome us and show us around. The Tour was well stocked, with everything a family needs. The property is very central, but the large garden remains a peaceful haven, great for relaxing. A great base for visiting Saint Martin and Ile de Re.
We had a lovely stay in this quirky location. We enjoyed the feeling of staying in such unusual architecture nicely fitted out in a sympathetic style and so close to the centre of the village.
