Our rustic log cabin on Lake Burntside was built in the 1920s and is the quintessential Minnesota family cabin. The house is fully equipped so you can walk in and enjoy. Swim at the dock, enjoy an evening paddle, relax and watch the lake from screened in porch, read on the hammock or play games in the sunroom on a rainy day. Hiking trails start just across the road. There is something for everyone in the family! The property consists of 5 acres of lakefront on the North Arm of Burntside. The North Arm is known as a haven for people who appreciate wilderness. Most of the time it is incredibly quiet, apart from the singing loons, but please note there is a YMCA family camp not far away and sometimes voices from their events carry across the water. The overall aesthetic of the cabin is stunning with many signs of careful craftsmanship from a bygone era such as hand notched logs, hand pegged floors, and a spectacular fireplace built by “Stone-a-Day Brown”. Inside, the primary bedroom has a queen size bed and a twin size folding cot. The second bedroom has 2 twin beds. The separate guest house has a queen size bed. The cabin was built in the 1920s so the kitchen is modest, no dishwasher, and the bathroom is in the basement (and there s an outhouse to boot!). The view of the lake from the screened in porch is something you’ll enjoy in every kind of weather. The guest bedroom is in a separate building close to the lake. This a comfy get away for a couple though it does not have its own bathroom. Directly in front of the cabins is the dock with an adjacent swimming area and room to tie up a boat. There are several chairs for comfortable reading and relaxing. Outside the kitchen is a charcoal grill and picnic tables that get a nice breeze from the lake. We also have two canoes and two mountain bikes for use. Paddles and life jackets can be found in the stone house.
A gem! Cozy, relaxed, beautifully maintained cabin on a pristine lake. Walking trails close by, canoes, swimming, napping, reading, knitting, cooking dinners, all activities for the perfect, unplugged vacation. Lore is super responsive and helpful.
Peaceful and glorious as always. The place never changes and we know all the quirks...it is an historical log cabin!
Was a very fun stay, I loved it! It is a rustic cabin no frills or anything special you are out in the woods in a cabin with your basic necessities. The paddle board and canoe were a really nice amenity to use. The cabin isn’t super bright inside so make sure to have flashlights or lanterns and the only bathroom is downstairs. The enclosed patio is great and I made good use of the day bed and patio! Would recommend for a nice weekend up north!
Our fourth year back to stay in this cabin on the banks of Burntside Lake, and we continue to enjoy the peace and calm we find here. Cabin has everything we need for a week on the lake, and we were able to bring our small fishing boat to tie to their dock. As before, we note that this cabin is not for everyone. If you are looking for modern conveniences, WIFI, and a shower, shop on. But if a week free of emails, a feel of yesteryear, and a bathtub in the basement are what you need, then you've found the right place. The woods surrounding are shady and we always enjoy the hummingbird feeder. Loons called morning and night, and we caught some nice smallmouth bass during our stay. Thanks for a wonderful time.
The cabin is about a 30” drive from Ely, on a dead end, dirt road off the Echo Trail. Most of the time it is very quiet and peaceful, and we do not permit jet skis. However, there is a YMCA family camp not far and they do have predictable lakeside activities that we can hear, e.g. a closing campfire every Friday night. Lake Burntside is a large lake with many islands and bays to explore. You can also access a network of hiking trails across the street which you can take all the way into the BWCA!
The town of Ely is a half hour away and has several restaurants, a number of shops, and a full grocery.
Please be advised the cabin is 17 miles from Ely, about a 30” drive. There are no stores in between town and the cabin.

I'm one of three sisters who own this beautiful retreat together. The cabin was originally purchased by our parents in the early 1970s when we were moving from Minnesota to NYC. They wanted to be able to return to their beloved Northland every year. Here we are close to 50 years later, bringing what would be great grand children if they were still alive. I handle all the bookings while I and my sisters Lia andAlison share the work of hosting. We have a second newer cabin across the road where we stay while you are visiting.
