4 Carpenters Cottage is a charming 250 year old cottage located in the Georgian town of Holt in stunning North Norfolk. The cottage is conveniently located near the centre of Holt, with easy walking distance of all the charming boutiques, art galleries, shops, cafes, pubs and fine restaurants. Easy driving access to all of North Norfolk’s world class beaches. The cottage is tucked away along a quiet loke and benefits from having private off road parking for one car (a rare thing in Holt!) Carpenters Cottage is a classic example of a period North Norfolk workers cottage located in the centre of the Georgian town of Holt. The row of cottages dates back to approximately 1750, Carpenters has enjoyed a number of renovations to provide high quality holiday accommodation. It is believed that the Cottages were named “Carpenters” after the artisan tradesmen who worked in the part of the town that was known to be close to the woodland area of Holt and therefore considered to be the residential area for woodworkers and carpenters. The basic construction of the cottage is traditional Norfolk flint; the walls are approximately 18 inches thick. This method of construction provides excellent insulation for both cooling and heating. Today the cottage enjoys the benefit of central heating and a gas boiler providing hot water. In 2019 we completed a refurbishment on the ground floor including new kitchen with all new appliances and breakfast bar, new kitchen flooring, living room carpet, curtains and a fresh lick of paint! In Jan 2020 we installed a lovely shiny new bathroom.
Very comfortable and attractive cottage superbly located near to the High Street but tucked away and quiet. Very convenient for walking to Budgens, the King’s Head, and numerous shops. Parking was easy and convenient. On the one occasion we needed to contact Sue she responded quickly and helpfully. Would highly recommend.
4 Carpenters Cottages is delightful and extremely well appointed. Also it is very quiet despite being so central to the shops and restaurants - we live off the beaten track and usually struggle to sleep near any traffic noise but that is not a problem here. We had a bit of an issue with the remote controls for the tv and Humax but contacted Sue and she sorted it for us immediately. As noted in a previous review, a shaving mirror in the bathroom would be helpful. We had a lovely few days and hope to return at some point.
We had a lovely long weekend at Sue's delightful cottage, the location is perfect - right in the centre of Holt but not feeling at all overlooked or busy - the town itself is great to explore, lots of small independent shops (with the bonus of having Budgens right on the doorstep too) and we had some great day trips to Blakeney, Wells and Cromer. Would definitely return.
If you are familiar with North Norfolk you will probably know what you want to do and where you can do it. If however you are a new visitor to the area here are some ideas.
In Holt you will find numerous Antiques shops of varying quality. As many as 8 Art Galleries are in Holt with many more in neighbouring towns and villages.
Morning coffee at Byfords on Shire Hall Plain in recommended, they also offer an interesting lunch and evening menu.
There are many gift shops in town, Bakers and Larner’s grocery and Deli is a must if you are looking for something special to cook for supper, otherwise most grocery needs can be bought from Budgens.
A trip to Sheringham on the North Norfolk Steam Railway is a pleasant day out. If you feel fit you can walk to the Holt Station, approx. 1.5 miles, otherwise there is a car park at the station.
The National Trust have a number of local attractions, Felbrigg Hall, Blickling Hall and Sheringham Park for woodland walking. Sheringham Park is a must in May with its magnificent display of rhododendrons. The car parks at Morston Quay and Blakeney Harbour are also free to NT members.
Other places to visit range from a boat trip from Morston to see the seals on Blakeney Point. Visiting local museums, the Shell museum, Gressenhall Rural Life Museum, The Muckleburgh Collection of Military Vehicles, Langham Glass, Leatheringsett Water Mill etc. etc.
If the beach is your thing there are pebble beaches at Salthouse and Cley next-the sea and slightly further afield are the glorious sandy beaches of Wells next-the-sea and Holkham.
The cottage is also only a 45mins drive to the Sandringham Estate. With generations of history linked to the British Monarch since 1862, Sandringham Estate remains the private country retreat to Their Majesties The King Charles III and The Queen Consort.
And of course Norfolk being the birthplace of one Horatio Nelson for history lovers, Burnham Thorpe at just over a 30mins drive away is a must. Here you will find All Saints' Church where his Father was rector, The Lord Nelson Pub and the site of the old rectory where Nelson was born.
If you enjoy walking you will find a selection of walking books and leaflets in the bookcase.
