This is a lovely house inside and out, and the pastoral area is beautiful too. We were seven adults, so it was a plus that the house provided so many places to be—dining room table and kitchen table, big deck, two parlors, four bright and spacious bedrooms. The hosts were fantastically responsive in communicating and helping to solve small problems, including on a Saturday night. The house’s unusually well-preserved historic authenticity was exactly what I was hoping for, and thoughtful updates made it very comfortable. Anyone with mobility issues will want to take note of the steep staircase. Occasional traffic noise in the front bedrooms, including the clip-clop of horses pulling Amish buggies. Yes to the Amish bakery, the Old Stone House Museum, and the observation tower. We had gathered for a family birthday, and we all agree that this house’s charms made it a magical stay.

The house felt like Vermont. It is spacious. Historic but homey. A well equipped kitchen. Trusting of it's visitors. Great for a gathering. Beautiful views in a quintessential Vermont spot. Trees laden with apples. And the friendly Amish farmers plowing the fields with horse drawn plows. We couldn't have asked for more.

I have the honor to be an employee of the The Old Stone House Museum & Historic Village, which opened nearly a century ago. Founded by Alexander Twilight (the first African-American to graduate from an American college and to serve in a state legislature), it is named after the massive four-story granite school building Twilight built in eighteen thirty-six. Inside its thirty rooms are exhibits that tell the story of this corner of Vermont, via furniture, paintings, tools, textiles, folk art, and artifacts of everyday life. Some noted items in the collection include Rufus Porter wall murals, a Civil War-era congressional desk, a small Mormon relic from Vermont, and the popular “phantom baby” portrait on the top floor. Two barns display antique agricultural items, horse-drawn transportation, maple sugaring equipment, and more. The Cyrus Eaton House, the old Grammar School and the original Twilight house are used for educational programs. The Hall House is also used for programs (on the parlor floor). Our beautiful 60 acres of grounds are the perfect place to picnic and no visit is complete without a walk to the observatory at the top of Prospect Hill.
