Ishanta is an amazing host! He’s is proactive, helpful and very easy to talk to. He makes sure your time at his place will be an experience you never forget. He’s informative but not pushy. You can tell he’s passionate about giving back to the nature and the community in the local village. We stayed for two nights which were way too short to take this beautiful place in! You can easily spend 3-4 days here, if you are into birds watching, kayaking, cooking, hiking, yoga and meditation. We skipped the first night’s sleep to hike to Adam’s Peak. Ishanta helped arrange the transport to the start of the route. When coming back to the house he made sure we had a proper lunch prepared by the kitchen personnel. He also arranged that we could have a relaxing massage with a professional masseur in the house. It’s very authentic and I would definitely recommend booking a stay here.
Ishantha and his team are truly amazing. One can feel that Ishantha is very strongly connected with the Walawwa. He has such a profound knowledge of the history of the estate and the surrounding area that I could have listened to him for hours. Ishantha runs this place whole-heartedly and also gives back to the community and the people of the surrounding village Gileemale. The estate is the perfect base for the hike to Sri Pada. My Sri Lanka highlight and definitely recommended. I will be back!
Incredible place and a valuable piece of Sri Lankan history. I stayed here for 7 days and the staff were attentive and ensured all my needs were met. The groundskeeper, Madushan, helped me make several excursions to explore the tea gardens, waterfalls and the rivers. And the amazing chef made sure I was well fed for my duration. I would highly recommended this place!
I came upon Gileemale Walawwa as this is the closest place on Airbnb to the trailhead to Adam’s Peak from the Ratnapura side. Ishantha and the staff have been amazing, genuinely good people and have been very helpful throughout. He helped organize transport to and from the trailhead and even packed some snacks for me. Beakfast and dinner are served every day and I enjoyed the experience of having local dishes while hearing about the history of the place from Ishantha. The house has a lot of history that you can feel throughout with the vintage furniture and decoration. You will have an authentic experience of Sri Lankan life, which is exactly what I was looking for and was very happy, but guests should come in with the right expectations, as this is not the typical hotel-like experience. With that in mind, it was a great experience and would recommend to other guests!

自我介绍
The Gileemale Retreat is the brainchild of the sole owner of the Walawwa, Ishantha Avinda Dassanayake who is the 6th generation member of the lineage of Punchi Bandara. Ishantha is currently working for the global renown London Stock Exchange as the Head of HR Operations in Sri Lanka. His passion for Sustainability, Culture and agriculture has given this property a natural boost in the tourism industry to experience a Colonial Sabaragamuwa stay with a range of experiences in the agricultural, wellness and Adventure based travel. Ishantha has stamped his mark on his ancestral home with a history of 300 years with the vision to build a sustainable hospitality venture that rekindles the past glory of the Sabaragamuwa culture while giving back to the environment and village community. A stunning piece of colonial architecture draped in 18 acres of lush greenery, and nestled in Ratnapura in close proximity to the Sri Pada mountain range, the Gileemale Retreat has been refurbished to cleverly combine the old classic charm with modern luxury. The mansion dates back to the times of King Rajasinghe I, also known as Seethawaka Rajasinghe who ruled the country from 1581 to 1592. The legend has it that the King bestowed a youth by the name of Appu from Pagoda, Kotte the gift of the village known today as Gileemale after he successfully accomplished an open challenge to climb the Kunudiya Rock. The King also permitted Appu to bring his relatives and friends to Gileemale and thus he changed his surname to Bandara. He was also granted permission by the King to build a mansion in the area which went onto become the Gileemale Walawwa today. Opposite to the walawwa, you find the old roadway leading to Adam’s Peak known as Raja Mawatha. For generations, the Gileemale family has served as the hospitality partners for king’s men. According to folklore, the mansion has been designed taking the flight of a bluebird as an omen. Although the ancient walawwa dilapidated; the present one was built around 150 years ago with a second floor inducted in 1911. The more recent refurbishment had given this ancestral walawwa the ambience of an upmarket holiday home at a very minimalistic finish. Consists of two luxury suites on the upper floor, four standard bedrooms downstairs, Yoga and Relaxing Lounge in the open interior courtyard, a reading room, museum of antiques and plenty of relaxing areas decorated with archeological monuments and paintings, the property has been designed to evoke a sense of place for the guests.
