Loups d'Or is a characterful, luxury and modernised holiday home which sleeps up to 6 adults + 3 children + 1 infant. The oldest part of this Périgord farmhouse is from the 14th century and is situated in the rolling hills of the Dordogne-Charente border. It has four bedrooms and two shower rooms and is ideal for groups and family gatherings. DOWN-SIZED OPTIONS of our holiday home are available in the off-peak season only. Please contact us. Gîte Loups d'Or has 4 large bedrooms and 2 modernised shower-rooms, 2 toilets. The spacious and cosy lounge with airco has exposed wooden beams, wooden floorboards and high ceilings and is decorated with original artwork, both modern and contemporary. There are 3 three-seater-couches, 2 armchairs, a Godin Colonial wood burner, a Smart-TV and a piano. In the high season, Loups d'Or is rented out to larger groups, but in the low season it is also possible to rent our gîte as a down-sized option with either 3 bedrooms or 2 bedrooms. This way you can enjoy all the luxury and privacy. Please contact us for more information. The kitchen diner has a terra-cotta tiled-floor and a large dining table, induction hob, oven, dishwasher, fridge, micro-wave, toaster, kettle and a Nespresso CitiZ. From the kitchen, you step onto the 16 sqm balcony with a large table for alfresco lunches and dinners and peaceful views over the ever-changing countryside. From the balcony, you walk down the steps to the third bedroom with shower room and toilet and is not internally connected with the upstairs. Outside, you have your own private terrace with a couple of chairs and a table and has beautiful views over the rolling hills of the Dordogne and a mini fridge in easy reach, just inside your room. The fourth bedroom, which is in the small cottage opposite, sleeps 2 and has to share one of the other shower-rooms and toilets. From its large west-facing private terrace, you have a spectacular view over the hills, where you can have your afternoon tea, a lovely G&T or a glass of wine. A garden lounge-set offers space for all of you. Loups d'Or offers everything you expect of a modern and luxury lifestyle, in a characterful and fashionable atmosphere. The house also comes with free Wi-Fi, a washing machine, DVD player, PlayStation (in consultation with a parent or supervisor), air-conditioning and central heating by means of a sustainable heat exchange system. Our Roman style, heated, eco-friendly pool, has an easy access and exit. The pool comes with sunbeds, parasols and an outdoor shower, with pool towels in your room. In accordance with French law, our in-ground pool has an approved security device. The pool is for your private and exclusive use so there will be no other guests during your stay, neither are we, except for cleaning purposes. The garden has beautiful panoramic views over the rolling hills of the Green Périgord and has many private spots in which to relax and enjoy the sun or shade. A BBQ is available to gather the clan outdoors for alfresco lunches and dinners. If you don’t like playing ping pong, you can always dive into our ‘potager’, the raised vegetable garden. The organic vegetables and herbs will come in handy for preparing your lunch or dinner. The great thing of self-catering in another part of the world is, browsing local produce on the lovely markets in all the villages and towns. You are also not restricted to designated times so you can choose to eat your breakfast, lunch or dinner at a time that suits you best. Another great thing of a self-catering holiday is that you can do everything at your own pace. If you want to treat yourselves, we can easily arrange a private chef or a caterer, just let us know. A fortuitous coincidence is that she or he does the clearing as well! Life is too short for the ordinary.
The Dordogne-Charente border is rural and characterised by its meadows, rolling hills, fast moving streams and verdant valleys. It is the part of the Périgord which is still unspoiled and the least touristy part of the département. Every month has its own charm, that's why we are open in all seasons.
Just over the border in the South-Charente and just a 15 min drive, is Aubeterre-sur-Dronne, which was given the prestigious ‘Most beautiful village in France’ award in 1993, one of the about 160 other villages in France.
It is an absolutely lovely village with cafés, restaurants, wine bars and visitors and tourists can enjoy roaming through the ups and downs of the narrow streets, popping in to admire the many specialist shops, like the many pottery shops. Settle down in the Place Ludovic Trarieux shaded by ancient lime trees.
A 30 min drive away and on the banks of the river Dronne lies the idyllic town of Brantôme-en-Périgord. You will often see that the place is referred to as the ‘Venice of the Périgord’, but that is a far-fetched comparison we think. Of course, there are a few bridges, five to be precise, but that is about it. The centre of the town is an island, surrounded by the river Dronne, and has a nice mix of medieval and renaissance architecture. We go to Brantôme regularly and find it almost a must to visit it and have lunch there in one of the nice restaurants.
All around us, and throughout the year, are villages and towns with weekly markets, an important part of daily life in France. Vegetables, wines, cheeses, colourful fruits, pastries, bread and other seasonal delights like nuts and mushrooms/truffles, to eat and cook when you get back to your gîte. If you’re not vegetarian, fresh meats, homemade sausages, pâtés and the foie gras (there is certified organic foie gras) are available on all the markets. Especially in summer, try to get there early as it can get very busy. Most markets are open from early morning until 12.00 or 13.00.
Brocantes are the famous French second-hand markets, and they are all over the place in the Dordogne and the Charente, you'll find one somewhere near almost every Sunday. On the 1st Sunday of every month, and throughout the year, our favourite brocante in the area is in Verteillac, a 10 min drive from us. The cafés and restaurants are all open for the occasion. And remember: the brocantes are no ‘haggle free zones’!
The Dordogne has a lot of art & culture to offer. Take for instance the approximately 17,300 years old Lascaux Palaeolithic cave paintings, only an hour and a half away from Lusignac, explaining the civilisation’s culture and history in painting.
> In Périgueux, the Museum of Art and Archaeology presents more than 45,000 works around four large collections, apart from temporary exhibitions.
> Brantôme has a rich architectural and cultural heritage, and very much worth a visit in every season.
> Angoulême hosts more than 800 cultural events throughout the year, like music, film and contemporary art exhibitions. A vast choice of creative and cultural activities brings the city to life all year round.
The Dordogne and the Charente are sprinkled with historical castles, medieval fortresses, and Roman remains. But you can also discover many museums dedicated to gastronomy, livestock, crafts, wine, Cognac ……they’re all over the region.
