The walk or drive on government beach road from our driveway in either direction is beautiful and definitely an experience you won't forget!
If you are taking a left to Pahoa you'll see the newest 2018 lava flow and if your heading right you'll drive through the jungle and pass by the ocean! It is one of the most scenic routes on the whole island! A must to see!

We highly recommend renting a vehicle to get around the island, there is a lot to see! If you cannot rent a vehicle you'll have to get a Taxi/Uber to town to catch the bus. You can check the bus schedule online at Hele On Bus. I recently heard Turo is available as well!
There are waterfalls and black sand beaches on the east and south sides of the island as well as the famous green sand beach in south point!
On the west and north side of the island you can experience the picturesque white sand beaches and more touristy shops!
Not far from us, about 1hr drive, is Volcano National Park and the lava is bubbling! There is lots of hiking with a restaurant called 'The Rim' that overlooks the crater that is yummy (reservations recommended).
Also roughly 2.5 hr drive is Kailua Kona or Waipio Valley. The island is bigger than it seems so plan your fun accordingly so you can get the best experience here on the Big Island!!
In Kalapana there is a Wednesday evening market from 5-10pm that costs $10 and has live music, food, kava bars and multiple vendors!
Also the largest market on the island is on Sunday in Keaau which is on the side of the highway as you're leaving Pahoa heading towards Hilo, from 7-12pm there is a huge outdoor market with 100+ local vendors and food! It cost a few dollars to park but it's definitely worth checking out!
Also in Pahoa town on the 2nd Saturday of every month is a free event from 3-8pm where local vendors host a Music and Art Walk!
