Central Istria, known as Green Istria, will reveal to you the most beautiful landscape of cultural and natural resources through its network of roads and trails (also suitable for cyclists): medieval castles on hills, truffle and wild asparagus forests, vineyards where delicious Malvasia and Teran grow. Ancient olive groves from which the fruits squeeze precious oil, known since ancient times. Almost every hill in Central Istria at its peak hides a fort or its remains. If in Europe all roads lead to Rome, then in Istria all roads lead to Žminj - the center of Istria. Žminj is a place at an altitude of 374 m, an ideal place for enjoying nature, hiking or biking. Take a stroll through the medieval town center, see the churches painted with frescoes, the remains of city walls and towers.
On the way through Žminj and its surroundings you will find interesting round stone houses situated next to dry walls. Such a stone house in Istria is called KAŽUN, there are over 5000 of them all over Istria, they used to be a tool store and as a shelter from rain and storm, and today they are made as souvenirs. The oldest and largest folk festival in Istria is Bartulja, which takes place on the last Saturday in August in Žminj. It has a hundred-year tradition and is an opportunity to bring together locals, their relatives, friends and guests. In addition to Bartulja, you can visit various events in Žminj throughout the year, such as a Craft beer festival, open air summer cinema, a cactus exhibition, concerts, and the fair is once a month. The fair was a trading venue, where peasants sold their products, and in Istria and in Žminj, the tradition of holding the fair has continued to this day.
In the vicinity of Zminj, near the village of Feštini, visit the Feštinsko kraljevo cave. The locals called it that because it abounds in cave decorations. The cave was discovered by the villagers in 1930 and served as a shelter during the war. The particularity of the Žminj area is especially reflected in the Žminj speech, which is a protected intangible cultural heritage of Croatia.
Ideal for summer refreshments at 13 - 15 degrees Celsius, and in front of the entrance there is a large enclosure for children's play.
National Park BRIJUNI
One of the most beautiful places for a day trip is certainly the Brijuni Islands, only 6 km northwest of Pula. This beautiful archipelago is specific in that it housed the residence of former Yugoslav leader Tito, who rested there and brought many distinguished guests from all over the world. On the island there is a museum with prepared animals and photographs of Brijuni from the past, and a train that allows you to visit the island. Brijuni are special in that they have a theater where performances are held during the summer.
Cape KAMENJAK
Cape Kamenjak is one of the sunniest and most beautiful places for swimming in Istria. It is located in the south of Istria, within the town of Premantura, about 10 kilometers from Pula. From Premantura you can reach Kamenjak by car, bike or boat. Cape Kamenjak is specific because it is a protected area, so there are no artificial roads, houses or any fixed objects, so you can enjoy the peace and untouched nature.
Baredine cave
The underground world of Baredine cave is a mysterious game of nature that has been created for millennia, away from the light of day and the human eye.
