This was a very spacious and clean room! Easy to book and check in:) We would definitely stay here again on our next trip back to New Mexico:)
I wanted to support a small independent motel and most especially a period-motel like those my family stayed in when I was a child so I was excited to stay at the “refurbished” Cactus Motel. Unfortunately it was major disappointment. The host was very nice during all of our interactions. After multiple communications with the host for assurances all Coronavirus cleaning protocols would be followed and we could have a no-contact check-in, a key to the wrong room was left for us. We called the host, who had to call her manager, who was at home instead of in the office. We put the wrong key back in the box by the office door as we were instructed to do and waited in our car because it was freezing cold outside. (Neither the wrong room nor the correct room were heated before we arrived. We had to do it.) Then instead of putting the correct key in the box for us to pick up as soon as she moved away from the area, the manager tried to walk right up to our car to hand my husband the key through the window. When she was close enough to the car that we realized for sure what she was doing, my husband told her to stay away and to go back and put the key in the box. She looked confused but did as he asked. A few minutes later she left the premises again. The room was cold but the furnace did heat it up relatively quickly. The floor-to-ceiling heating vent also kept making very loud, random Bang! noises that made us jump every time. It sounded like a person was jumping in it or hitting its metal walls. The bedroom and common area were clean and the sheets were clean and comfortable. The beds were comfortable. We had our own pillows. We were glad to have the small fridge and freezer because we needed them for what we kept cold in the car when driving. There was no phone in the room. The motel provides hand-soap and body wash, but no shampoo. There were no curtains on the window right over the beds so the outdoor light was shining through the blinds in our faces all night. The TV was not working so my husband called the host a second time. The host was again very nice, but she could not fix the problem. We did manage to get low-quality network-reruns TV finally but that was it, all night. There were four Cactus Motel wifi networks but the instructions in the room did not tell us which one was for guests. At first the password did not work because the instructions said to use all-CAPS, but lower-case letters were needed. I figured that out. I managed to connect to three of the networks but could not access the Internet. My husband called the host a third time and she said the manager would be back at 6:00 PM and would reset the system. We were there three hours before we could theoretically use the wifi. However, once the manager returned and reset the system just a few minutes after 6:00 PM, I connected to three of the networks but the wifi was so slow that I could not reach websites and when occasionally I did, it timed-out before pages could open. I could not use the wifi all night. The bathroom was grotesque. The listing and reviews said the motel was “refurbished" but the bathroom in our room was so bad I was shocked the host rented the room. The old tub was horribly stained, its surface was peeling, the caulking was so old it was pulled away from the wall and black in many spots, and the shower head was separated from the wall. Neither I nor my husband would even step in it to take a shower. The toilet seat was old and peeling too. The shower curtain had what looked like cleanser on it, which made me wonder how that could be if it had been washed in hot water and dried in hot heat like it was supposed to be between guests. There were foam drinking glasses by the microwave and coffee machine but they were tiny 4- ounce glasses. We’ve stayed in pristinely clean, fully-equipped, three-bedroom, two-bathroom Airbnb homes with good wifi, multiple TVs, and streaming services that worked for less than and about the same as we paid for our room at the Cactus Motel. It absolutely was not worth even close to what we paid. A word to the wise for anyone who might be thinking of staying in that little town, the only restaurant we could find that was open refused to let us order and pay over the phone for a curbside pickup. They said we had to go inside. We ate crackers for dinner. We could not wait to get back on the road the next morning.
