West Waterford is a hidden gem, with the newly opened Greenway Cycle Path, extensive coastline, mountains and a wonderful river valleys on the doorstep. Dungarvan is the perfect base from which to explore with many fine beaches for swimming, and secluded lanes for walking. Dungarvan is a lovely old market town, with lots of good restaurants and pubs.The Bay is home to a large oyster fishery, and a favourite walk is out to the Connager, a shingle spit that stretches three miles across the bay; it is a protected habitat with many rare species, such as the horned poppy. The Comeragh Mountains are a walkers paradise, with many scenic attractions, such as Mahon Waterfall.
Helvick Head and Ardmore, an Early Christian site, with a dramatically located Round Tower, are just a few minutes drive away. A little further along the coast you will find Youghal, an ancient walled town. Lismore, with its Castle and Gardens, and Cappoquin are historic villages on the Blackwater River, a fisherman's paradise. Waterford city is home town of the world renowned Waterford Glass and the Cathedral Quarter, with its brand-new Medieaval Museum. The star attraction is a complete set of Pre-Reformation vestments. Cork city on the river Lee is an easy drive away, where the centuries old English market is well worth a visit.
