This is wonderful place to discount & enjoy the sun, sand, water & wildlife. Since sand is everywhere it will get into everything, this is not a resort but people little home but part of ecotourism. Little to no mobile connection & no WiFi which was perfect for us to disconnect & relax. For those who are vegetarian, extremely limited, it would be smart to bring your own dehydrated food so you can add water and have a meal. If you eat fish & meat you’ll have no problem. Please bring your own soap, lotion, headlight, electrolytes, ear plug (if you're a light sleeper), water shoes, protein powder (if vegetarian), basically this is camping on island. We saw amazing tropical fishes, crabs, starfishes, sharks, dolphin, pelicans, butterflies and various other birds.
False Advertising! Don’t get me wrong. I absolutely loved my stay at Yani Island. But that’s only because of the friendliness and generous hospitality of the natives of the island. On the other hand, this travel agency falsely advertised that we would have a private cabin. When we reached the island, we had to live in a dorm-style room with other guests. Also, there were hidden fees which we had to pay after our stay ended. It was unfair that transportation fees from the barsuken port to the island was not included in the overall payment. Some things were included in the overall payment, but some very essential services were conveniently left out. We didn’t mind paying extra, but it would’ve been good if the listing included all the payments transparently.
Overall, I enjoyed my San Blas trip. Although it wasn’t exactly the experience I expected. The island itself is very beautiful. I read a ton of reviews on other accommodations and got the feeling they were all very rustic with limited accommodations. Which I’m used to camping/couchsurfing and wasn’t worried about my comfort. However, for the price I paid I was disappointed in some things. First of all the food was not good. The description of fresh fruit and fry bread was not true. I was there for 3 days and only got fresh pineapple once on the last day. Never got fry bread. One breakfast was a fried egg with lettuce, tomato, American cheese on white bread. Not exactly the local experience I was hoping to have. I never got the choice between fish or chicken, it was fish every lunch. When there was a large group of people staying on island you could tell the fish had been made at separate times in an attempt to serve everyone at once. As a result the fish was cold and had been sitting out after its cooking. When there was only 2 of us on island, my fish was fresh. Dinner was the same both nights. Bathrooms were sometimes non-functioning. There would be times where water was shut off/broken so you couldn’t flush. Also with 2 bathrooms there was always one without toilet paper. Sometimes neither had toilet paper. My bedroom was facing into the wind and the door didn’t close. I could lock the door from the inside, but that meant anytime I was outside my door was wide open for anyone to see/enter. My belongings were safe but I expected a private room to have a functioning door. Also the term “private” is a bit of a stretch. There are four walls separating each bedroom but no ceiling, only a shared pitched roof so all rooms were essentially combined in terms of sound and light. If the person next to you talked or stayed up late you’d be up with them. Which to me, was the goal of having a private bedroom and not a hostel experience. I was told by the driver that a glass of water would be served with each meal. Turns out this was wrong and they charge $2 per water bottle. If you do the arranged transportation they do stop at a store to let you shop, but misinformation was not great. Excursions were nice and they tried to take us out daily to different islands. I met other guests staying on different islands and heard about their experiences. They all sounded happier with their stay than the group on Yuni island. All in all, I’d go to San Blas again in a heartbeat. But I’d personally choose different accommodations.
