Comfortable apartment located well for the area. Quiet even though on busy road. As described with good facilities. Stay would be dramatically improved by some basic maintenance and attention to detail.

Here is the good & bad of our experience in the Ferndale apartments: - Easy walking distance from the Maidenhead train station, with a nice train line that goes directly into Paddington Station (~1 hour trip.) Maidenhead itself, however, seemed rather depressed and in transition; not a pleasant place to spend time, but ok if you're focused on exploring other places. - Easy driving distance to Windsor Castle. - There is a little grassy area ('back yard') behind the building that was nice for the kids to play in, though there are no benches or places to sit back there, and its main purpose seems to be as a smoking area (which means smoke flows straight in through open windows of the apartment.) - There is indeed free parking, but beware: the entrance to the parking lot is designed in such a way that one has to drive over a curb. There are two depressions, but there are brick walls in front of these, so the parking lot is inaccessible from the proper street entrances. This makes it very difficult and unsafe to pull the car into and out of the driveway! -Beware of Apartment 03! It has living room doors that open onto the parking lot, which feels very exposed and unsecure when open. Aside from being an eyesore, having doors on this side meant that we could not comfortably open them for ventilation during the very hot week that we were there, without people being able to look - or walk - straight into the apartment from the street/parking lot. This was rather disconcerting when a group of drunk guys congregated in the parking lot. If you are the type who is concerned about security, or if you have children sleeping on the pull out sofa, this could be an issue for you. It was for us. In addition, the gate on the "picket fence" around our asphalt 'terrace' was broken, making things look even more cheep and dilapitated. We had originally booked Apartment 02, which, from what we could tell, has livingroom doors that open to the back yard. This would have been especially nice for our 3 kids, and even though the back yard is not fenced, it would not have felt as exposed to have these doors open, and would have provided a much more pleasant experience. Unfortunately, Ferndale switched us to Apartment 03 two days before our arrival, due to another guest extending their stay (why couldn't they be moved into apartment 03?) The last-minute switch felt unproffesional and was very disappointing. Had we not been paying so much for this apartment, I probably would not be so frustrated about the experience. But with other little things that were broken or unclean (like the comforter that smelled of b.o.,) paying over $1200 for 5 nights in an apartment of this quality, and getting "bumped" at the last minute, just added insult to injury.
