Gilly is a converted 1989 Gillig Phantom Schoolbus into an offgrid tiny home on wheels. Off-grid living isn’t for everyone; it requires some hands-on involvement in bus systems (like changing the composting toilet, and conserving water / power.) Unfortunately, we cannot host folks with mobility limitations. There are a few big steps and a tiny closet-sized toilet room. That said, our guests and our family have found it to be a unique and fun lifestyle, and overall very comfortable. We designed Gilly with simplicity and ease in mind. The space is cozy and quaint, with enough windows to enjoy our surroundings and enough insulation to be protected from cold and sun. Many spaces have multiple functions (ie the shower is also a bench, freezer is also counter space) and are easily navigated. Gilly is 40 feet long and about 8 feet wide; we raised the roof 18 inches so even the tallest folks should have adequate headroom. There are a few big steps entering the bus, and we use a chair as a stepstool to get up to the lofted bed. The floors are bamboo with a few rugs. The toilet room is tiny (think airplane bathroom but smaller.) Tony (6’2 - 200 lbs) just fits. As part of the stay, guests are responsible for changing the composting toilet bag every day or two, dumping it into the humanure compost pile nearby, and covering it with sawdust. When you book, you will be sent a video detailing the process (it is simple). We believe it is important to account for usage of resources and waste! Although we listed Gilly as being able to house 4 people - we meant two adults and two kids. There is one king size bed and one loveseat that could sleep one middle-sized child. Please be aware of your water and power usage. Gilly has a 100 gallon water tank which can be filled - the video will walk you through that process when you book. Gilly has solar panels on the roof and enough power to weld while on the road! Depending on the weather, we may plug into the house power. Gilly has two air conditioning units (it does get hot in the summer.) Please turn them off when you aren’t using them and use the reflectix window coverings to keep the heat out. See the video for details. Gilly has a wood stove and a mini-split heater for the winter chill. We supply firewood that is cut to length. We do ask that you split the wood yourself (or if it is already split, that you chop a box of wood for the next guest to “pay it forward.”)
