Lightwood sits on over 110 secluded and private acres. It is a beautiful place to rest, relax, and get away from it all. The forest itself is a Virginia Woodland Preserve. Lightwood Forest, Williamsburg area, is in rural Surry County, on the south side of the James River from Williamsburg and Jamestown. A beautifully restored eighteenth-century house, with over two miles of hiking trails. Lightwood Forest is the perfect blend of history and nature. A completely unique historic property, this house is as close to a small historic eighteenth-century English country house as one can find in this country. This is not surprising, however, considering that when the earliest section of the house was built, Virginia was still a part of the British Empire. That changed, however, by the time the owner went to fight under General Washington during the American Revolution. When he returned the family prospered and the large section of the house was built circa 1795. The family lived in a largely Quaker area, and although not Quakers themselves, they were influenced by their neighbors, and as a result were early southern abolitionists. Surry County had the largest population of free Black people in the United States, and the land was later owned by a Black family of farmers in the 19th century. Lightwood House itself is elegant, and although much of the furniture and artwork can be dated to the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the house is also extremely comfortable and cozy. Children are most welcome at this exceptional property, and it is a great adventure for them to explore the nooks and crannies of the house as well as the surrounding outdoor landscape. The magnificent forest, with many trees over two hundred years old, envelops the house in a warm and welcoming embrace, and through it meander over two miles of private hiking trails, passing through fields and alongside streams, up hill and down ravine. Be sure to enquire about our Treasure Hunt quest in ancient Lightwood Forest. For children, and for grown ups who are still young at heart, join a search for the Treasure hidden by fairies, who, according to legend, came from far-off Scotland centuries ago and settled amongst the ancient beeches, poplars, and oaks in Lightwood Forest. Be on the lookout for an ancient parchment scroll, beribboned and heavily weathered, which contains, lore be told, a mysterious treasure map, containing fascinating and elusive clues to the location of the treasure itself. This treasure, protected through the centuries by ancient fairy magic, lies within a wooden chest that verily brims with a stupendous hoard of jewelry and sundry other baubles, which can be shared and taken home, with, of course, all the good luck and very best wishes forever and ever from the fairies! This one-of-a-kind and once-in-a-lifetime experience for adventurers young and old costs $350.
We loved staying at Cliff's place. It was beautiful inside and out. The kids had plenty of room to run outside and loved exploring the gardens and nature trails. We wish we lived closer to make more frequent visits.
This was an unforgettable experience, when they told us all you need is clothes and food they weren’t kidding, they provided everything… soap, mosquitoes repellent, lotion body wash, shampoo, condiments, coffee, tea and even toys for the kids to play. They even had board game that we didn’t use because we were so busy exploring , bbq and making s’mores we even had a vows\ wedding ceremony for our daughter that had it to cancel her wedding due to Covid-19…The treasure Hunt incredibly fun.
This house is a wonderful place to refresh yourself after long days of being a tourist. It’s the real deal, 100%. From the solitude of Lightwood Forest to the interesting antiques (each one tells a story!) you will be in heaven here. This was our second trip to Lightwood House and we were so thankful to be able to spend a few days of a longer trip here. Cliff is a national treasure.
We loved our weekend at Cliff’s house!!! Not only was it gorgeous but it was incredibly welcoming for kids, dogs and adults. The kitchen was also very well stocked with pots, pans, baking sheets and utensils. We would recommend this home to anyone and wi be back again!
Surry County is a traditional rural Tidewater Virginia county. While the property is rural, the small town of Surry is only one mile away.
A car is needed when staying at Lightwood.

I am a professional musician, a one time opera singer, having sung many leading roles in the U.S. and in Europe. I still regularly perform in early music ensembles, specializing in the popular music of the 17th and 18th centuries. I love early/classical/traditional music, history, antiques (especially early long case clocks) and early architecture. Joy loves old houses, the English countryside, growing flowers and especially loves being a mom.
