Overall our experience was a bit uncomfortable. First we ended up in a different location then the one listed, from what it seemed to be a arrangement demeke had with the Solyana hotel. Demeke assumed we were doing a tour i asked for a quote for that i never agreed to when i realized we were being overcharged. He sent on his behalf the hotel staff to accompany us to what i thought was the ticket place for the monastery to realize it was the actual tour. Imagine the face of the staff that thought they were getting American dollars to go see the monasteries (which you pay for separately to enter) and the boat which you can get yourself for their standard price of 400 birr and us saying we never agreed to the quoted price demeke tried to hustle us. We were able to agree to 600birr which included "boat rental and a tuk tuk" back to the hotel. After we did the 1 monastery and the boat trip, it was not clear who was paying the boy driving the boat who actually did the work to take us to the monastery. Our next 4 days we spent getting questioned by the hotel staff on whether we had spoken to demeke as if all our movements had to be accompanied by him. To the contrary my husband and i ventured off to the center on our own and just saw the few things bahir dar has to offer, lake view and good food. Aside from these interactions we had a nice time in Solyana hotel with some staff who were genuinely interested in us.
