This is one of those places you think twice about giving such a glowing review to just because it's so fantastic you don't want it to be booked up next time! We had a really wonderful stay here. The lodge is super cosy but also bright and airy. It's also in a fabulous location - that view from bed in the morning! - and has everything you need for a relaxing break. We had a fire on the first night and second night it was warmer so we popped the champagne and sat out on the deck to catch the sunset. We actually ended up coming back early from exploring in the day just to spend time there and sit on the deck with the view. Marty is a great host, very proactive in communicating with us and checking we had everything we needed. *One or two reviews mentioned it was difficult to find but Marty's instructions were good, we also just looked it up on google street view and stuck a pin on the driveway and used that for our google maps destination.
Private beautiful cabin. All the amenities needed to relax. Loved the wood stove .. although the place was beautifully warm & snug. View spectacular across the bay. Very comfy bed & furniture to sit on. Loved the reindeer hides!! Lots of little extras to add to our stay... Wine, chocolates etc. We couldn't have asked for more. Basically hibernated for 36hrs!!!
Second time back at Marty’s. Great host and location, spectacular views, will return. Highly recommended.
Amazing cabin in front of the sea with beautiful views. The cabin has everything you need and it’s very easy to find. We booked it in the last min and Marty was very fast responding, also he was very welcoming and kind, he left few bits for us in the cabin. We would definitely stay here again, it’s worth the money.
We are a 5 minute drive out of town. Fully surrounded by countryside and water, but very close to the main town of Newtownards as well. A large bustling market town with plenty to do and see. There is a busy farmers market every Saturday in the main square, and it is surrounded by plenty of great coffee shops and bars to enjoy!
Try Haptik for the best brunches and coffee, or check out the Parlour bar for Guinness, pub grub and open fires. If you’re looking for fully authentic old Irish bar, check out the family run International bar on the Main Street ( also known as Rices Bar ) some of the best Guinness locally.
You also have Tuk Tuk Asian bistro, chef and manager, romas bars and restaurant, the strangford arms and The Bull and claw are just a handful of local eateries in town.
There is a footpath the whole way into town and you can cycle or walk too, though it’s narrow and dark at night so not recommended after sunset.
Strangford lough has many gems. Mount Stewart national trust estate is less than a few minutes past the lodge on the left. It has a nice Cafe, a stately home which is open to the public, and beautiful walks. Further down the road is GreyAbbey village with its antiques, coffee shops, and Abbey. Next along is the seaside town of Portaferry. You can get the 10 minute car ferry across to the other side of Strangford Lough and watch dolphins and seals swim alongside! The town also has an aquarium and seal sanctuary along with nice restaurants, bars and a hotel.
Information on the above and more will be provided in the lodge if you require it.
Taxis are cheap and reliable locally. A cab into town will cost around £7. To get the bus back you need to board the portaferry bus and ask the driver to get off at the black house.
The town has a busy bus station which has direct connections to Belfast city centre every 30 minutes. It’s a 30 minute bus ride approx into the city centre. A taxi into Belfast city centre would cost around £25.
