Ron & I have been farming for 30 years, (organic for around 1/2 of that). "Selby" is a working 3,174 hectare Certified Organic farm, environmentally friendly property and holistically managed in Rankins Springs. As our two children are off into the world, we have recently decided to open our property to interested visitors. We’ve have been developing our natural farming system since the mid 1990’s and now run a flock of around 1,200 Dorper Breeding Ewes using Holistic Grazing Management to balance livestock health, productive pastures and soil fertility. We also grow cereal grains, produce hay from Lucerne and oats during good seasons to sustain stock health during times of drought. Water supply is very precious as we are not on the pipeline. Rainfall runoff is collected from erosion control contour banks stored in dams and our house water in tanks. Our farm has vast bushland and unique wildlife included in the biodiversity which is valued in balance with our farming operations. We are hosts to backpackers in a program called WWOOF. (Willing Workers on Organic Farms) This has been a wonderful experience for our family, meeting new people, learning new things. So taking on exclusive, interested people wanting to 'get away from it all' seemed like the next step. Be prepared, there is very limited mobile & internet service (only from your own provider), no TV reception but a DVD is provided if you want to watch a movie snuggled by the fire.......just heaps of peace & quiet. The landscape on 'Selby' is ever changing depending on the season, be prepared it could be very dry & quite different to what your were expecting if you visit us in the warmer months. However 'water' is the ingredient to make everything thrive & look wonderful.....AND farmers are always looking towards the sky, either wanting the rain or winging about it!!! Ron & I are friendly, enjoy meeting new people & respect privacy (so we won't encroach in your space). However we take the 'Duty of Care' seriously & do make regular contact to make sure you are safe & have returned from eg: a walk or to ensure your stay is all you want it to be. Our set up here is very rural. We are genuine recyclers, having renovated The Shack from some used materials. Nothing much ever gets thrown out around here, we can find another use for most things - you'll be surprised!! We want you to experience the real Australia, breathe in the fresh air, spread your wings, enjoy the solitude or if it works in our schedule....maybe you can join in, in what we are doing around the place......IT IS UP TO YOU - this is your Farm Stay, you do whatever you need to, to relax......we'll respect & fit into your needs. We are a new farm stay so things are still a work in progress. Feel free to bring your own bike - make sure though you have puncture proof tyres, they're are great riding tracks with different degrees of difficulty. Or bush walking might be more up your alley. You can do as much or as little as you like when staying on Selby..... read a book, bird watch, decide to go on a farm tour or day trips to local villages & towns might be nice too.
