Like most Portuguese medieval cities, the historic center of Viseu is a labyrinth of alleys, many of them flanked by old noble houses, which lead to the highest point of the city, Praça da Sé. Famous for its Gothic chancel, the original 13th-century cathedral combines various architectural styles as additions have been made over the centuries. Next to the Cathedral is the Grão Vasco Museum, named after the 15th-century Portuguese artist who also gave his name to one of the region's best-known wines. The museum houses many of his works, including the famous 14 paintings of the life of Christ that once graced the walls of the Cathedral.
Gastronomy and the art of good eating and drinking are very important in Viseu. There are many restaurants and the delicacies they offer are very varied and appeal to all tastes. Roast lamb and goat are their specialty, but the region is known for excellent hams and sausages, many of which are essential ingredients in many of the tasty stews and stews. Being the center of the demarcated Dão wine region, Viseu is proud of its wines and there are established routes for those who want to visit the main producers in the region. Alternatively, for those who prefer white drinks, Viseu has an ice bar, the Minus 5º Lounge Bar, where everything from the benches, to the walls, to the sculptures and to the glasses, is made of ice from Canada's glaciers. The bar is part of the huge Palácio do Gelo shopping center which includes shops, spas, swimming pools and a 600m² skating rink.
Local crafts include hand-embroidered lace and wicker baskets. The city comes alive on Tuesdays with the weekly market. The movement intensifies in September with the famous Feira de Mateus, which lasts an entire month.
Enjoy the food, architecture, history and beautiful landscapes in Viseu… accompanied by a full-bodied glass of Dão red.
Viseu's location has made it a privileged viewpoint over the centuries and there are still traces of the Roman occupation scattered throughout the city. The Cathedral, located at the highest point of the city, was built in the 13th century on top of Roman walls and the oldest monument in Viseu, the Cava do Viriato, are what remains of an old Roman fort and watchtower. The Roman Wall, which is part of the original 3rd century Roman wall that protected the city, is still standing.

I'm a Civil Engineer. The rehabilitation of the building Loft House Jardim das Mães was concluded in July 2015 with materials of the best quality, respecting the building's historic and original architectural design. It combines modern amenities and historic features to fulfill 21st Century needs, with a great isolation and acoustic comfort right in the historic centre of Viseu.
