Originally designed as an exclusive middle class preserve in the late victorian period with the vast expansion of nearby Edinburgh University in the1960's and 70's the area is now an interesting mixture of "boho' and professional types. The ground floor properties (often called main door flats because of their private entrances) tend to be occupied by professional families with the rest of the flats given over to students. The Architects of the elevations were greatly influenced by the "Baronial Architecture" of Scottish country houses built in the Highlands at the same time. Today one can still see an interesting array of features associated with this movement such as ornamental turrets and strange symbolic stone blocks creating an almost fairytale feeling. To serve the divergent social mix Marchmont boasts a wide variety of Pubs, Cafes, supermarkets shops and speciality shops.
The Old Town is within ten to fifteen minutes walking. Princess street (where trams that connect to the Airport are located) is about a twenty minute walk away.
