Take a moment to pause and encounter the wonders of the Little Karoo. This is Big 4 country – starry night skies, dirt roads, quiet open spaces, and fresh air – simple pleasures that are becoming increasingly rare in a modern world. We are pet-friendly too! Just a little more than 2,5 hours from Cape Town, this 100-year-old homestead, barn and bunkhouse personifies authentic Karoo life. 5km’s off the R62, between Montagu and Barrydale. Base price is for 4 beds, 8 guests. The Manor House forms the base price for 4 rooms, 8 guests. Additional rooms on request. The Barn house has 2 rooms, 3 beds, 4 guests at an additional fee. The Bunk house has 5 single beds at an additional fee We'll only rent to your party so you get the hole farm to yourself.

Alchemy Retreat is absolutely beautiful. Food for the soul! The house is perfect for large groups or big families with lots of kids. The house is well-equipped, spacious and has such a great feel to it. Johnathan (Farm Manager) was amazing. So helpful and responsive. Will most certainly be back for another visit!

Friendly and helpful hosts and a beautiful location. However, the property needs some serious work and TLC. Broken blinds and doors and, most importantly, massive leaks in multiple places when the rain started. We had an enjoyable stay, but for the cost, the maintenance issues are inexcusable.

We had a lovely comfortable stay over Christmas - house had everything we needed and the views and surroundings were just what we were hankering after. We were only four of us but would love to come back with a bigger group and hopefully warmer weather to be able to enjoy the outside spaces more. Jonathan was super friendly and helpful - thank you!

This is a beautiful farm, with an amazing view. The hosts are friendly and available and proactive. Two beautiful horses, sheep, chickens, a ton of cape weavers, it’s nestled right in nature and you get to have the whole farm to yourself! Aaand it’s pet friendly (even though we left the fur kids at home this time). Do keep in mind that this is on a farm though and although it is very clean, there are lots of flies and miggies, but they have a lot of fans and sprays to keep them at bay (we saw it a little too late). And even though the property is accessible to all types of vehicles, it is definitely better suited to higher/tougher cars as the dirt road can be a bit bumpy, so if you have the option, opt for the bakkie ;) It’s very close to Joubert-Tradouw wine farm (amazing platters) and Karoo Saloon (must visit) and Barrydale’s markets and delis etc. Check in was a breeze and we would definitely return! Thanks for a lovely girls’ weekend 😄

Alchemy Retreat is ideally located and close to plenty adventures in the Montagu and Barrydale area. Both these charming countryside villages are worthy of exploring.

Our access road off the R62 is partly tar and good dirt road. All vehicles can access the guesthouse. There is plenty of safe parking on the property.
