It’s been a long time since I’ve stayed in an old-style airbnb, the kind where you live with your host, share space, say hello in the living room, all that. I can appreciate privacy in my travels, but there’s a human connection that is lost in the new style of “hotel-like” listings, a connection hard to get elsewhere when you’re just in the area for a few days. Hisham was exactly the kind of host you’d want for this kind of experience. On the first day, after I was welcomed and settled, I told him I would be looking for a restaurant nearby before going grocery shopping, and he offered to walk me around the neighborhood. We traded stories about life in our respective hometowns, healthy habits, and odd work experiences. The rest of the week I never felt pressured into hanging out with him, but when I came in after a day of sightseeing, it became a pleasant routine to chat in the common area a bit before retiring to my room. As a host and a human, I’m so glad I met Hisham.
